husband (only 47) with enlarged prostate..... timeline for tests

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to diagnose prostate cancer, from all the tests? I know, as my dad had motor neurone disease, that diagnosis can take forever on some conditions, but wanted to know what the time usually is, approx for this.

My dad died from his distressing condition on Feb 2011, so this is a bit raw for me. While he was ill, I gave up editorship of four magazines (which I totally loved) to care for him, and do not regret that for a minute. It was entirely the right thing to do.

However, my publishing director called just before Christmas to say that he was launching a new magazine, and wants me to do it. I was so thrilled! At last, something positive after two years of sadness.

I was due to go to the planning meeting today, but couldn't go.... I had a complete and utter emotional breakdown on or doorstep.

I feel so, so sorry for my husband as they said that they are concerned, and fast-tracked his PSA and scan. I'm just want to know, roughly, how long the tests take to come back.

This is a practial consideration, as I need to assess whether doing the new mag is possible, in the context of the time I MIGHT need to devote to my husband.

Bloody ell. I'm 37, and I feel ANCIENT!

With prostate cancer, diagnosis is usually pretty fast - PSA tests (which are non specific) will come back in days, then a biopsy would need to be done, the results of which again would be back in a week or so.

The diagnosis phase is usually pretty swift, but if he has prostate cancer the outlook would normally be very good indeed, and he might be offered a range of treatments to choose from with what might seem no great haste to proceed to any of them, as generally the outlook for men with prostate cancer is excellent.

I'd go for the magazine launch tbh

Diagnosis for prostrate cancer comes back quite quickly and importantly there is lots and lots they can do even if the diagnosis comes back positive. My Dad was diagnosed with it over four years ago and is continuing to do well despite being told he had a fairly aggressive form at the start and him not opting for surgery or radiotherapy.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, MND is truly a horrible illness to suffer. Diagnosis for MND takes a long time because there are no conclusive, non-invasive tests for it and in its early stages shows a lot of similarities to other diseases.

Thank you both.
Yes, I have left it open with the new mag.... am going next week.

Feel the fear... and do it anyway!

I wish i didnt know the answer to this but my dad was recently diagnosed. I would say weeks. Probably about a month or so between my Dad having the initial appt with consultant after the PSA test. It is very quick - we were advised not to bother going private due to the NHS being so quick.

I hope that it goes well for you. We are currently waiting to see how advanced the cancer is and what treatment to go with.

Take care.

My Dad was told he had prostate cancer back in June & he finished his treatment on 22nd December.

I know all treatment is different, but he started off with hormone treatment, which is tablets & implants and then he had 7 weeks of radiotherapy.

If you are on Facebook have a look at the Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group.

If you wanted to speak to my Dad, I am sure he would talk to your or your DH. He is very positive about it all & could tell you what to expect.
