the cold that goes on forever, do I need to take little one to the docs?

Hi, My little girl is 3 and a half and has had a cough and cold for four weeks. She's had green snot, a cough and her hearing seems reduced, but no high temperature and in the main she's her usual self. The rest of us (me, husband and two boys) have all had it too, sinus pain etc too.

The question is, how long do I let this go on? I know that the symptoms are a normal immune response, but it's been ages. Has anyone else had it go on like this, should I take her to the doctors?
Cheers

I don't really have any advice, just sympathy.

My 14 month old twins have had this cold (or a series of colds?) for over two months. I've taken them to the doctors two or three times only to be told it's a virus and it'll be gone by summer!

Alongside the coughing and snot, they've both had high enough temps and breathing difficulties that have sent me to the out of hours doctor twice each. The OOH doctor prescribed antibiotics both times (twice each), which greatly improved all symptoms and gave me my happy children back for the week they were on the antibiotics. Within a day or two of finishing the course, I have listless coughing children again, yet the doctor insists it is viral and won't prescribe more/stronger antibiotics. I am at my wits end really as I know that the improvement on antibiotics means there is at least an element of bacterial infection going on, but the doctors don't want to know Sad

DH and I also have the longest cold ever. Haven't even tried getting either of us any kind of treatment - just want my happy kids back instead of the listless off colour babies I have again now their second course of antibiotics has run out Sad

Good luck whatever you decide to do. I really hope your GP is able/willing to help more than mine.

Oh flips, poor you. In the end I took her to the Dr who prescribed antibiotics as she has 'inflamed tonsils and a rattly chest' She is also listless and up and down a lot. I just hope that the medicine does the trick and it doesn't return like for you.

I also have twins, so I share your concern, it all seems that much greater when there's more than one. There's either both poorly or one at a time, which ever way round you rarely get a break eh?

Best wisheswww.mumsnet.com/te/4.gif

How is it going enji? I really hope the antibiotics are working like they did for us Smile

I am on the verge of going back again, but find it hard to face the scornful looks if the doctor as he looks at my sick children and asks what's wrong. He seems to think I take them down there (involving a car journey and fetching the in line buggy out of storage as the side by side doesn't fit in the surgery doors) for fun and turns the appointment into a 'it must be so hard for you not getting any sleep while they cough til they vomit. What help can you get?' discussion. I have yet to adequately explain that I have gone to the doctor for help with the cause of the children's symptoms, not for advice about asking my mum to help so I can nap in the afternoons! I don't need to nap in the afternoons, I need my children to feel better!

Sorry, rant over. I just wondered how you are?
