Medised - is dd going through cold turkey???

Dd (7 mths) has had a chest infection afer a cold since before Xmas. I gave her a dose of Medised before bed for the last 3/4 weeks (GP said it was ok). Now after antibiotics have finally cleared it up, her brearhing is easy and I've stopped the Medised.

Now dd is struggling to fall asleep and wakes a couple of hours later and is disturbed at night. This has been happening for 4 days.

Has she got dependent on the sedative to stay asleep? Or is it just a phase? Have I got a junkie daughter??

she may be going through withdrawal. sorry.

Sorry, it does sound liek it. I had a similar thing with dd, although she only used it for about 5-6 days. I made her go to sleep without it then when she woke up during the night I would give her just a tiny amount . I did this 2 or 3 nights then she completely forgot about it. I think she was about 9 months at the time.

medised is not addictive in that sense, it wouldn't be available OTC otherwise. Trust me - my daughter went through genuine sedative withdrawal when she was a little baby, it's an entirely different kettle of fish and very well controlled/treated with anticonvulsants etc.
The sedative stuff in Medised is an antihistamine. They're not addictive, plus the dose in Medised is minute - my GP describes it as a placebo dose.

Your dd might have lost the ability to settle herself and is restless because of this.

Hayls - yeah I was a bit surprised too, but she said the "consult your doctor after 3 days bit" is to prevent people self-medicating a genuinely sick baby who could be very poorly (pneumonia etc) rather than getting them checked out.

I only gave her a dose at bedtime rather than 3/4 times a day - I wanted her awake at some point during daylight

Thanks geekgrrl - that's what I needed to hear. Will just have to face a few more disturbed nights I guess.

I know, mcmudda, I used to only give her it at bedtime. Did give it once during the day and she slept for hours. If your gp said it was ok you did nothing wrong. I can't see that at the dose you were giving her it could possibly do any long term damage so don't stress. She'll be used to it now in that it is part of her sleep routine, not that she's 'addicted'
Good luck
