adult wetting the bed

Im a regular who has namechanged because this is overwhelmingly embarrassing (so much Ive come to an anonymous website for advice), please dont laugh at me Blush Blush Blush

Last night for the 3rd time in my adult life I wet the bed Blush kind off. Well it didnt get onto the bed, but I still woke up weeing. The first time was when I was at uni so about 1999/2000 (this was the first time I ever remember as I was so young the last time). The second time was about 2/3 yrs ago, but did it again last night.

Do I need to see the Doctor? Im really worried about going back to bed.

I should say I do have a DH who last time was great and very understanding, as I managed to wake up before it got onto the bed last night he doesnt know cos I am far too embarrassed. My 4YO is better at keeping dry on a night than me Blush

Is this normal? Do I have a problem? I dont usually need the toilet in the middle of the night and I havent been drinking or doing drugs (ever for the drugs part). Im not overly worried about anything, infact luckily I have no worries, well apart from this one now.

Please dont laugh or be nasty to me, I am genuinely very embarrassed by this, but also worried. Do I need to see the Doctor or see if it becomes more regular? Im so worried about going to bed tonight now, dont want it to happen again.

Hi
It`s not your pelvic floor muscles being a bit slack is it?? A few excercises could cure that!!
My advice would that if you are worried, go & see the doctor just to put your mind at rest at least!! Or if there is a problem, doctor will get it sorted!!
Hope you get more advice on here btw!!

tooembarrassing · 02/01/2012 10:27

Ooh I meant to ask if it could be that in my OP. Could be, but I do the exercises, just what if Im doing them wrong?

Thanks for the reply

My 15 year old wet the bed a while ago and I was worried but loads of people on here said that it was not uncommon as a one off in a deep sleeper. Were you particularly tired? Dd said she was dreaming she was
peeing and she woke up and she was. It hasn't happened again so far!

tooembarrassing · 02/01/2012 10:38

I am a deep sleeper and find it really easy to get to sleep and rarely wake up. I too was dreaming I was on the toilet. If it was the only time then fine I would accept that, but Im worried that it will happen again one day as it has happened the other year too.

Its really embarrassing to wet the bed in your 30s Blush

I wet the bed when I was a teenager when I was dreaming I was on the toilet. Ever since, if I ever get up to go to the toilet, I touch the sink and the toilet roll to make sure they're "real" (and I'm in my 40s now!)

I think it's really common, so unless the frequency increases, I wouldn't bother with the GP.

tooembarrassing · 02/01/2012 11:24

So has that worked for you Agent getting into the habit of everytime I go to the toilet to make sure its real? The problem is I dont remember the first part of the dream, just remember being in that state between dreaming and waking thinking am I really weeing or just dreaming it. Woke up properly and found I was so went to the toilet (in RL) and sorted myself out. Sorry TMI.

It does sound like its me just being too asleep to wake up, but why do I do that in my 30's? Ive got 3 DCs and I never did it while PG I actually woke up then. Maybe I should not drink anything after a couple of hours before bed say from 9PM and always go before I go to bed. That might work too.

Thanks for your help Smile

Ive never avoided anything just before bed, I always go to the toilet though (esp since last time). Looking for a loo is a recurring dream for me.

Thanks everyone for your help. I will see how it goes with not drinking past 9PM (unless it cant be helped like Im actually having a social life or something) and make sure I empty my bladder before bed. I will also try to get into the routine of making sure that when I do go I will make sure its real.

I still feel embarrassed, but not like there's a big problem anymore, but if it happens again soon I will look for professional medical advice. Funny thing with professionals I am never embarrassed about anything, but I suppose once you've pushed babies out there's nothing more to see. Besides Im sure they've seen worse. Im just embarrassed to talk to everyday normal adults about it.

I think you should see your GP or look in your local BT phone book and see if there is a loca l continence clinic- staffed by nurses.

There are some serious conditions that can cause lack of bladder control- such as MS- and although it's not likely to be anything serious, I still think you would be reassured to talk to someone.

AgentProvocateur · 02/01/2012 15:52

Yes, it has worked for me. I very rarely get up through the night (unless I've been drinking copious amounts of alcohol) but I do check every time I do. Good luck.

tooembarrassing · 02/01/2012 16:23

amelia thanks for pointing that out to me. Ive got an appointment on Wed anyway for something totally unrelated (then again maybe not Hmm) so I might bring it up then. Although I dont have lack of bladder control as I stopped as soon as I woke up and have no problems during the day ever so Im very doubtful it would be anything serious. Though it may be a good idea to rule anything out. Just had a quick look on NHS website and diabetes was mentioned.

Agent Thanks for your advice, Ive started doing it today Smile

too did your GP give you a thorough check? Only this happened to a cousin of mine and it turned out he was having seizures in his sleep.

tooembarrassing · 02/01/2012 16:32

ThePathan Ive not been yet. Got an appointment on Wed morn for something else (though it could be connected) so will mention it then too.

Please do too, hopefully it's nothing sinister, however better to be safe than sorry.
