Ds had Febrile Convulsion. Any advice ?

Ds ( 23mths) had febrile convulsion on wednesday, whilst at Nursery.
Nursery phoned to say that he was fitting, had been for over 4 minutes, and that ambulance was on its way.
Was working at home, so was there within minutes.
Ambulance men had already arrived.
Fit had stopped, so didn't actually see it.

Got in ambulance with ds and went to A&E.
DH met us there.

It was awful.
Ds discharged after a few hours and ds is now o.k.
Seeing GP tonight.

Any experiences ?
Any advice ?

Sorry to hear about your dd - I haven't had a personal experience of this but when I used to work in a nursery saw it quite a few times. Was it brought on by a fever? That seems to be the most commom reason for it happening. Hope she's ok now xx

my dd had theses when she was little, she had them when she got a high temp, took to a& e a few times because they do scare you, but told not to worry witch we always did, they stopped when she was about five i think her last one was,

My eldest had one at about 20 months. Brought on by high temp. Never had one again. Think they're are quite common but scarey at the time.

my brother used to get them but there are websites that yu can look on for guidance. the main things to remember are:

febrile convulsions do not harm the child.
controlling fever in the future: an antipyretic, cool clothing, no physical cooling.
parents to learn how to manage a recurrent convulsion: recovery position, nothing forced into mouth.
immunization schedules should be completed.

Thank you everyone.
Yes it was bought on by fever.
They have given him antibiotics for an ear infection, which they think was the reason.

Apparently they are quite common.
I should not blow this out of proportion, right ?

2 of mine have had convulsions caused by high temperatures. My advice would be whenever your ds starts getting a temp cool him down straight away.Remember you can use Calpol and infant nurofen together (well alternate them every 2 hours) - that works really well at keeping temps down. Also, take his clothes off.

Also if he is warm don't suddenly make him cold (my ds had a convulsion when he was taken out of his nursery into the cold outside) - I don't think they advise putting cold water on the child anymore.

He probably won't have another and they are harmless, but I sympathise with you - it is terrifying.

helsi · 13/01/2006 13:55

Yes they are quite common between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

my d/d at 3 had one in Cyprus it was awful and i still remember it very scary. be mindful of temperature and keep it at bay whilst feverish with calpol and nurofen do not be afraid to keep it topped up whilst d/s is unwell. tepid sponging lukewarm not cold water. we did become a bit paranoid after this but thankfully she never had one again.

my DH had these convulsions several times when he was a toddler and he is now a strapping 6ft 3" man - it is relatively common but all you can really do is try to avoid/treat high temperature and dont worry too much (easier said than done!)

KBear · 13/01/2006 14:27

Don't blow it out of proportion no, BUT it is a shocking thing to experience and you will feel nervy for a while (took me ages to get over the shock of my DS fitting) and now, two years later, am still over-cautious with the temp thing when he's ill.

There are a couple of other threads here about it if you want to have a search. Happy to talk about it more but will have to be later, got to get on with something.

All the best for your Ds's speedy recovery.

my dd1 also had one at about 8 months old - she too had a very high temp ( over 40 - I was freaking out ) and was beetroot faced. But calpol seemed to work. I also called an ambulance and she was checked over - like other posters , it was because of an ear infection. She has never had once since and she is now 4. Try not to worry - they do seem quite common. You did the right thing in getting him to hosp though.
