I have been finding scabs on my scalp as well as it feeling itchy in those spots. Also my hair can't go without a shampoo for more than 24 hours or it will start to clump together in a greasy mess at the roots, however the ends of my hair seem rather dry. I've tried using tar shampoo and it got better initially but soon returned to its usual condition. I now use Head & Shoulders which seem to control the itch a bit better. I tried using my children's shampoos but they either don't do a good enough job of cleaning and leave my hair greasy, or they just make my scalp itch even more. Should I be trying another shampoo? Say one labelled specifically for oily hair perhaps? Or should I just go to the GP or a trichologist or even a dermatologist? Its really bothering me. I have some grey hairs, I haven't been dyeing my hair for the, past 3 years since this started, and just wish this would go away. .

It sounds like psoriasis. Does it get worse when you're stressed iutby any chance? My mum has it, definitely worth going to the doc about. Try rubbing olive oil into the plaques and leave overnight before washing with a tar shampoo.

It weeps a bit actually, or bleeds a bit, if the scabs come off or if I scratch. If it is psoriasis does it mean it may never go away? Friend of mine has psoriasis on her elbows and she said she's tried many things, they never go away, and she's already been seeing the dermatologist at the hospital.

I suppose the real question is... will I still be able to dye my hair if I do have psoriasis?

I'm no expert re psoriasis and until it's been diagnosed by someone who knows then don't assume the worst. Psoriasis is an auto immune disease which has periods of remission as well as flare ups, my mum dyes her hair with no irritation but this may not be the same for everyone. Please go and see your gp or ask for a referral to see a dermatologist. Ps don't scratch or pick the scabs, just makes it worse x

Does it happen if you dont colour your hair? I had a leg ulcer patient once whose wound would not heal for years, eventually he got referred to a consultant who ordered an allergy test. Turned out he was allergic to the latex in the dressings he was prescribed.

He healed really quickly when latex free dressings were used.

Maybe your allergic to hair dyes and this is how it manifests itself. You can get prescription shampoos off the gp too, polytar, things like that.

Have you tried Nizoral? I get dermatitis on my scalp, usually when I change shampoo or new hair product. My scalp becomes incredibly itchy and I get scabs. Like you I tried tar shampoo and head and shoulders, which stopped it from getting worse but didn't cure it. A week of using Nizoral and it cleared.

tigercametotea · 01/01/2012 21:53

Hmm okay will give Nizoral a try but I think I will also need to see a dr for this as I'm not quite sure what it is. I am a chronic eczema sufferer as well. I think I must have had it for much longer than this. I had been colouring my hair for a long long time. The itchy parts were there but in smaller patches and they did sting on application of hair colourant but after rinsing the sensation was gone. I stopped colouring my hair 3 years ago nearly, because I was pregnant, and this seemed to have gotten worse since then, and I haven't dared touch any colourant since. Its all very strange.

DH has psoriasis on his scalp which occasionally migrates to his eyebrows too :( Head & Shoulders is vile stuff and is really way to harsh to use on your poor scalp. Apparently Aveda do a really great shampoo for psoriasis sufferers. I am about to post on S&B about it (which is where I saw it recommended once but can't find link). Will come back when I have a result :)]

I never knew how bad Head and Shoulders really is for the scalp and hair! I have stopped using it now. Tonight I used DC's Halos and Horns Zingy Orange Hair & Body Wash for my hair even though I usually use it only for my body, as its the only soap I've used that actually doesn't aggravate the eczema I have on my body. It doesn't sud up very well when used on my hair, but my hair came out feeling very clean after using this. I think I will continue using this and see how it goes. But ujjayi if you do come up with the name of that Aveda shampoo, let me know!

You could try Kerastase shampoo, my friend suffered from psoriasis around her hairline and this was recommended by her hairdresser. Quite expensive but it worked. HTH.
