DD ..... for weeks now... worse the last 10 days, took DD to the doctor, he said it's a virus and gave a prescription for anti-biotics ..... er..... you ARE the doctor right?

She is nearly 13, hasn't slept properly for weeks, hardly at all for the past week, she has black rings under her eyes, is teary and sore from endless coughing. It's a high up dry cough, not a chesty cough, non-productive if you know what I mean, just endless barking.

Tonight she got a bit panicky because there was hardly time to breathe between coughs. I am going to take her back to the doc tomorrow and hope someone different is there for a second opinion, I think.

What do you think wise MNers? I am blessed with children that don't need to see the doctor often thankfully so am I over reacting? Should I just let it run its course and not worry? Seeing her getting upset has got me worried.

Hurrah! I have a Vicks humidifier I got from the Sainsburys pharmacy. They are quite noisy to use at night but they do definitely help.

Glad you saw a human sensible doctor today Kbear.

oh you have my sympathy. we have it here too, dd is 9 and is always ill. awful awful cough. she is on amoxicillin atm, and has been coughing that dry cough for 2 weeks.

i do hope your dd improves, please let us know how the sabutamol goes. is she on the same anti biotic?

Kbear · 30/12/2011 19:40

Yes, she said unless it worsens she should keep taking the amoxycillin - if it does worsen to see out of hours doctor and they might up the dose.

She has had her head over steam this afternoon - hasn't made much difference. Perhaps might lead to a better night for her though.

Her cough is so loud my ears hurt. Tia Maria is, apparently, a known cure for ear ache right?

Oh glad to hear you now know exactly what the problem is, and hopefully they'll be some improvements soon

I'd say Tia Maria would work wonders for earache Smile and it is Friday night!

Baileys is helping here. x

Oh and did she get a spacer or aerochamber with the inhaler? can be tricky to get it right if not used to it

startail · 31/12/2011 01:34

I'm really glad you got a concerned doctor who looked properly.
Hope she feels better soon.

Kbear · 31/12/2011 09:20

she got a "thing" to put the inhaler in then to breathe into but she has got on ok with the inhaler by itself.

She slept well last night!!!

mousysantamouse · 31/12/2011 10:17

yep, that's the 'spacer'.
glad she had a good sleep, this is so vital for a good recovery.

Kbear · 31/12/2011 10:33

Thanks! She is desperate to go back to school on Tuesday!

Glad she had a good night! You feel so much better when you've all had some sleep don't you.

Try and get her to use the spacer every time anyway, it maximises the amount of salbutamol that gets right down into the bronchus and upper airways, where it's really needed.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery Smile

She is still coughing... but ok in herself....

DS (10) has had flu and now a chest infection - been off school since last Monday, just not getting better.

DH also has it now.
