Poor ds (23 months) just did the most enormous poo, with a small amount of bright red blood in it, and smeared on his bottom and nappy. After calming down from initial shock, and having phoned nhs direct in a panic, I've now been reassured that this isn't unusual, and that I need to make sure he's drinking plenty and has lots of fibre in his diet. He has been a little constipated over the past few days, but nothing major, and it isn't an on-going problem.
So....he does eat loads of fruit and veg (though we may have been overdoing the bananas, which probably doesn't help), and generally eats what I consider a healthy diet, but could I add/give more of that contains decent amounts of fibre (apart from All Bran, which i'm sure he won't eat!).
Any hints or advice much appreciated.

Adding a teaspoon of olive oil to cooked food can also help.

All you comments are so helpful and supportive - thank you. I know it's not a major issue, but did scare the life out of me, so it's great to have all this information.

This morning we've had a slightly softer poo, but no blood, and no discomfort so hopefully things are improving

good, glad things are slidding out easier!

CORI & Kreamkrackers, yes lactulose is safe for children. I added it to my daughters milk as it's very sweet. Checked with my consultant ( DD's constipation was very bad) & he advised this is ok & give teeth a good clean afterwards.

What really helped my DD is this really foul stuff - also added to milk - called sodium Docusate. We were amazed at the difference this made. DD now does her poos in the toilet, & this postition (she would stand ridgid with her legs squeezed together) all seems to have made a wonderful difference.

Comment about the bowel stretching is stop on - big poos are a result of the faeces building up, so when they come out it's really quite uncomfortable.

I just recommened keeping an eye & if no improvement, get to the doctors & request some medicine. (or demand as I did !)

lactulose is very good but does cause tooth decay i think its made of sugar!!!

mojomummy · 15/01/2006 12:13

yes will cause tooth decay if teeth aren't properly cleaned - but not the same as drinking, say, fat coke, which immdeiately attacks the teeth.
