Just seen BBC News these new early symptoms are seen up to five hours before the more obvious signs high temperature/vomiting/rash etc and are from studies taken from children with Meningicoccal meningitis. This particular strain can kill in hours so to catch it as early as possible is extremely important.
I don't think these new symptoms are commonly seen in Pneumococcal meningitis though but the other symptoms are the same. (remember you don't usually see a rash with this type.)
The best place for information on every strain of meningitis and all the symptoms for babies and children is the meningitis research website.
Dd story is under case studies.

Yes defenitly Happymum i was seen by Gp and even a peadiatric consultant but it still took 2 days to diagnose Dd maybe because pneumococcal is very slow in showing itself.
You know your child, stand your ground even if your slightly concerened that it's meningitis.
As it was too little too late for us and many others.

I was also told by a GP that the stiff neck is a sure sign - being unable to bend the chin down to the chest. Apparently the rash is one of the last symptoms and by that stage it may well be too late.

amyjade - just read your DD's story. I am so sorry

Stiff neck often isn't there esp in babies & young children - the early symptoms can be pretty vague so I think this new advice is good as otherwise people could be falsley reassured thinking "oh, there's no rash or stiff neck so it can't be meningitis" IYSWIM. Mother's instinct is so strong - if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong, get it checked!

A young child died here quite recently, even though his mother took him into the brand spanking new Children's A&E at UCH (it was closed). They told her he had tonsilitis and to go home...... She works in our local M&S where I go all the time and I'm friends with lots of the staff but don't know her personally. I also know someone (good friend of my niece) whose child died of meningitis 4 or so years ago. Same story, went to the hospital, phoned the Dr and hospital again, child died How can I personally know of TWO people this has happened to???? and both times the parents tried to get medical help!!!!

there is a very interesting - and worrying - article in today's G2 section of the Guardian about GBS ( Group B streptococcus) which claims the lives of newborns. Apparently pregnant women in some other countries are routinely screened for it but not in the UK. Sorry, can't do links, maybe someone else can do this?
