He is 40 and has sensitive skin but only really started using moisturiser in last couple years. He's not a big drinker ! But his face gets really red a lot. I think health otherwise ok he is slim, runs, eats reasonably well. Prob too much coffee. Doc just gave him cortisone which doesn't reduce redness. Any ideas?

It could be rosacea - worth looking this up? There are certain triggers for rosacea - alcohol, temperature extremes, not sure if caffeine is one, but the heat from coffee might trigger it.

Well what does the doctor reckon is the diagnosis / cause? Without an opinion from the doc it's all just speculation really. I'd go back to the doc and ask them what the redness actually is and then take it from there. If you know what the cause/diagnosis is then you can look into how to deal with it.

I'd get his blood pressure checked. There certainly seems to be a correlation (purely IME - no scientific basis for this) between a certain sort of high colouring, and blood pressure problems.

Rosacea?
Seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Tinea barbis = fungal skininfection in beard area?

Lots of options - or simply skin type: some fair people will have rosy/red complexions quite easily; usually with exertion/heat-cold/emotion etc. Age comes into it as well, previous sun exposure/wind-beatenness (if that is a word Hmm?) etc etc.

Is it uncomfortable? Does it feel 'hot'? Itchy? Sore?

Really, anything skin related needs to be actually looked at in RL for any kind of sensible advice. What did his GP say? Or did he see a dermatologist?

newgirl · 19/12/2011 17:57

He saw the gp but came back saying cortisone/aqueous cream is the answer. I don't think a reason as such was given. I think the cream has improved dryness but not redness. I'll look up roasacea. He definitely has not looked after his skin all his life. He cant eat fish so perhaps a lack in fish oils? Do you think seeing a private dermatologist could be a good idea? It may seem mad coming on mn but I have found in the past that advice on here has been really useful! Interesting about blood pressure - I think gp did check this.

I just looked up rosacea on the nhs site and i think this is it! The triggers are the same and the symptoms. Thanks for the advice mnetters :)

That's what I mean - get the GP to actually give a diagnosis otherwise it is all guesswork. Book another appointment.
