Legs that are different lengths in a toddler?

Can anyone help (apart from Potty, lol!)?

My ds was weighed & measured by the HV yesterday for his 18 month check. He is finally starting to catch up to his peers (yay!) but then the Hv noticed that his right leg was about 1cm shorter than his left leg. I kow that lots of people have small discrepancies, but should I be concerned? Does anyone else have any experinece of this?

Ds is due to see his paed on 6th Feb anyway, so i will be mentioning it then, but any advice would be appreciated.

Don't worry too much. My HV continually measured DS1 incorrectly and plotted him wrong in his book.

Can you notice it at all? If not it's probably not even there. I agree though if you are concerned mention it to you paed when you see him.

I can't ay that I have noticed it yet, although I haven't been looking, lol! I am going to strip ds naked later and let him run around so that I can watch him properly.

I wondered ih she had measured him right, but even the HV was surprised, so insisted on doing it twice, we even got him up and laid him back down again and got the same reading.

I'm sure that it is nothing, but it can't hurt to ask about it anyway.

Heartmum2Jamie,

My friend's dd had one leg shorter than the other and was waddling around like a pirate with a peg leg and she had to be put in a cast because of a hip problem aged around 18 months. Happy as now though.

is your ds walking yet? If so if he ambles around semi steadily and even tries to sprint occasionally I wouldn't worry too much and wait till feb to mention it to the paed.

Good luck

am shocked she measured his legs .. they don't even measure their height round here

I would suggest that if you haven't noticed a limp yet you don't worry about it but mention in passing to paed

Yeh, my DS's have never had their legs measured either. Is it the norm?

Heartmum2Jamie · 10/01/2006 17:40

Pfer, no, the HV was measuring Jamie's height, but we had to use one of those measuring mat things, which aren't 100% accurate. (Also, they don't routinely chack thier height here, I asked for it to be done as I like to monitor his growth after his heart surgery)

Ds has been walking since he was 12 months, although he does do lots of "unusual" walks, but I just thought that was part of his personality . He is always doing things to make me laugh, plus he is trying hard to gallop (like a horse, lol) and jump. It certainly doesn't affect his climbing. The HV did mention that his body may compensate for it by tilting or rolling his pelvis. I will have to see if I notice anything after his bath later. I'm not overly worried, just curious more than anything.

my son had uneven leg creases... apparently this meant he had one leg longer than the other...
