bright red cheeks - any advice?

Our 4 year old ds has woken up with bright red cheeks which he says are hurting/itchy. No sign of any other rash or spots, and he's feeling OK in himself. Any idea what this might be (or might be the start of...). I'm at work but have told dp to keep an eye and phone the GP if he starts feeling poorly, but just wondered what it might be?

I don't know if this is what your ds has but in abook I have it talks about Slapped checks.
Symptoms
After a typical incubation period of 4-14 days, the following symptoms appear.
Bright red cheecks. followed by fever.
But it could be anything I would take him to the doctors it could be a virus.

Sounds like Slapped Cheek disease - lots of info on NHS Direct website and Netdoctor. Not a serious illness but highly contagious. If it is SC, he needs to be kept away from women in the early stages of pregnancy as it can be extremely harmful to the unborn child.

thanks! I also got looking on the internet and think it could be slapped cheek - doesn't look too serious but dp was v. pissed off as 2 of her friends were due to be coming round this morning - and both are pregnant...

Slapped Cheek or Scarlet fever (has he had a very sore throat ?)

Dottydot · 10/01/2006 10:45

no - no sore throat. Ds2's under the weather at the moment aswell, but probably teething - no bright red cheeks (unless they're on the way?). Ho hum. I'm going for slapped cheek disease and probably won't go to the doc's unless ds1 starts feeling poorly.
