What would you do - Breast Ultrasound Appointment

Bit of history:Went to GP as have lumpy breasts and was a bit concerned about what I was feeling. GP said felt fine to her but agreed to refer me anyway as I have insurance via DH's work. I saw Consultant who also said felt fine to him, just fibrous(?) tissues. He said he would send me for Ultrasound anyway but more for my benefit to establish what he called a "base line" to try and make it easier for me to check my lumpy boobs!!

I am always paranoid as my Mum had BC when she was 35. I am 34.

Anyway, ultrasound is tomorrow but I could reschedule it for the 29th Dec. I'm jsut worried that if radiographer finds something that needs further investigation I'll be worried all Xmas (an d I really am a worrier) and wouldn't really gain anything time wise - does everything shut down over Xmas?

I know I am being really stupid but I am worried they will find something and would rather not know until after Xmas but am I being really silly?

I can totally understand your thinking on this. I had to have a (routine) mammogram a couple of weeks ago and I really thought about postponing it until after Christmas. I went ahead and all was fine. Surely you will get any results v soon if you are having the ultrasound privately? When I had a problem about 10 years ago I had an ultrasound and was given the results then and there (and that was NHS). You are doing exactly the right thing by checking yourself and reporting any problems. It will be useful as the Dr says to get a baseline, so that if you need any future scans it can be compared. I suppose it comes down to whether you will be still worrying about going for the scan after Christmas if you postpone it? When the results are clear you will have a lovely peaceful Christmas if you go ahead tomorrow.

Well look - with your family history I think you are being very sensible to be proactive BUT there is nothing on examination that is concerning anybody at the moment. I would be inclined to get it over with tbh.

I went ( this is NHS) for a mammogram and ultrasound last tuesday as i still had a lump after a breast infection. They did a core biopsy at the time of scan and i received my results yesterday ( thankfully OK). So if the NHS can do that in a week hopefully private can do it quicker or certainly no longer. Myself i don't think i could postpone as i like to know whats going on but of course we are all different.
Also they can tell alot from the mammogram and ultrasound scan and you could get the news on the same day.

mm, as you are young your breasts are denser so they like to use ultrasound to get a better picture. If you think you might fret anyway while you wait I'd go ahead and have it done -if they found anything of concern they'd do a biopsy (results can be back very quickly) so you'd hopefully have a clear result and an unworried Christmas. If anything was found then it'd be picked up really early and treatment is brilliantly effective these days.

When I had a breast ultrasound the consultant gave me a running commentary so I knew immediately she hadn't seen anything that concerned her.

That taxi ride home was truly 'Christmas come early'.

And honestly, if she does want to investigate further the best present you can give yourself is knowing you got booked in as quickly as possible. I would go ahead. Thinking of you.

Did you go jojo?

JoJoMummy321 · 15/12/2011 23:25

Hi! Yes I decided to get it over with and everything was fine thankfully. The radiographer was nice and chatted me through it. I am so glad I went and thanks ever so much for taking the time to reply. It helped me to do the sensible thing and just get it over with!!
