We have just hadto rush ds (15 months) to a dr. For no reason what so ever he had a fit, he calmly layed himself down then started jerking and frothing at the mouth, he stopped breating for a while. The dr said he wouldnt treat him as it was the first time hes done it and there was no obvious thing that brought it on. I have never been so scared in all my life. Has any one had a simmilar thing where there is no explination?

No experience of this, but poor you, Charlee - you must've been terrified

Has he got a temperature?

Pixiefish · 09/01/2006 23:30

No experience but thinking of you and hoping he'll be fine xx

helsi · 09/01/2006 23:31

My brother suffered with a few feverile convulsions (I think that's what they were called). Something to do with him being unable to control his body temperature. He was a toddler when he had them. I hope you get to the bottom of it Charlee

flutterbee · 09/01/2006 23:31

Could it have possibly been convulsions from suddenly getting too hot?

lucy5 · 09/01/2006 23:31

No experience either. You must have been terriified, this happened to my friends son when he had a really high temperature.

Oh charlee you poor thing. That must've been awful. Is he OK? You must be very keen to know what brought it on.

hunkermunker · 09/01/2006 23:33

I would get a follow-up appointment with my GP and ask to be referred to someone to check him out thoroughly.

Dropinthe · 09/01/2006 23:34

You must have been scared shitless, you poor thing! Am so sorry!! Demand to be seen by anyone and everyone!!!

Charlee · 09/01/2006 23:35

Hes ok, not the usual cheerfull littl boy i know and love, hes very quiet and subdued. They said he will sleep deeply for a while.

Imtotally in shock i havr no idea why it happened or what brought it on. Hes got no signs of infection anywhere, they could find nothing obviously medicaly wrong with him.

If it happens again we have to go back incase hes epileptic, he was just so calm all through it.

i am contemplating taking to see my g.p this afternoon i wasnt really happy with the dr in a&e he just looked in his ears and throat said he wasnt going to do anything for him if it happened again go to the gp as he might be epileptic, he got quite shirty with me becasue i didnt know if ds has wet himself when it happened, he was in a nappy forgod sake how could i know?

lucy5 · 09/01/2006 23:38

id go back anyway, you need to know why!

Charlee · 09/01/2006 23:40

Yes i think i will but its difficult as were heading back to the uk in 2 weeks time so if he got reffered for tests we probably wont be here for them and im not sure what they can do at a gp's surgery.
Its just scary to think if it could happen without warning once it could happen again.

Charlee, poor you. Ds had this when he was about 17 months old his temp was so high (he was teething and generally under the weather with throat infection and tummy troubles) It happened when he was lying in my arms and I can quite honestly say it was one of the most scary experiences of my life although I surprised myself by staying rather calm, possibly because a friend had this happen to her the week before with her ds too.

We called out a doctor who was wonderful and checked him over, we did the normal things to bring down his temperature. Thank god it happened when he was with you, imagine if he'd been alone.

I would be camping out on the Dr's doorstep if he'd tried to fob me off. I don't think it was strange in my ds's condition as it appeared to be a febrile convulsion and brought on by him being over heated it doesn't seem the case for your ds.I would definitely get a appt as soon as you can to set your mind at rest.

I hope you've recovered from your ordeal.

AggiePanther · 10/01/2006 00:02

My dd had about 5 or 6 febrile convulsions between the age of 1 and 5 (now 10) ...very scary to see but apparently worse for the parent than the child. If it is febrile convulsions apparently its to do with the speed temp goes up rather than when its at its peak. Hope everything turns out ok for you as I know how scary this can be.

Hi, i was just about to start a thread on this. my DS 18MO had his second fit in 3 months yesterday. he fitted for 3 mins then was unconcious for 12. it was much worse this time round and the recovery was slower. his first fit was brought on by an undiagnosed throat infection. he didn't have a particularly high temp as was the case this time, but took him to the hospital and they told me that temp doesn't have to be high it's the speed it rises at that causes the fit. feel more concerned this time as they couldn't really find a reason for him having a temp. he's got a bit of a snotty nose, but nothing else really. they also told me that there is absolutley nothing you can do to stop one. yesterday i'd given DS 10mls of calpol 45 mins prior to him fitting as i'm so paranoid about it and it didn't help at all.
would be really grateful to hear if anyone else has experienced repeated fitting as the drs can't seem to offer any explanation other than he's prone to them.
charlee, i really feel for you as even though it was DS's 2nd one and i knew what it was, it is still one of the most frightening things a mum can ever see.

thanks bethron. as they can't really determine the cause of his temp. we are quite worried. what sort of tests do you think we should push for?

Aww Charlee hun.
My ds1 had these from 1-3.Whenever his temp shot through the roof. Febrile convulsions. Awfully scary but thankfully no lasting damage. The worst one he stopped breathing, bit through my finger as I tried to grab his tongue and gave him mouth to mouth. The hospital & doctors were fabulous.
If your little one has'nt got a temp, then not sure what to say. Surely they've got to give him a thorough check over.
Love & hugs xxx

AggiePanther · 10/01/2006 09:54

My daughter wasn't sent for tests until she was 5 because they've normally grown out of febrile convulsions by 5 and she had another then...tests were fine and she did eventually grow out of them. The doctors gave me rectal diazepam (valium) to keep at home to use in case she had a fit as well as rectal paracetamol (alvedon?) to bring temp down quicker. Having the diazepam did make me feel abit safer as I felt there was something I could do if she went into a prolonged fit ...had to use it once and it worked fine..but still very scary.
