Hands up who has taken the Morning After Pill?

Me.

Thank heavens this option exists. My life might have gone on a very different course without it. And I am so glad it might have spared me the dilemma of abortion.

When I took it, I had no side effects or abnormal symptoms whatsoever. It was just like a period arriving early.

To anyone considering MAP v. just taking a punt - I would say don't hesitate to err on the side of caution and ask for it.

Also me, great thing if used as designed to be (in case of emergency etc)

baubleybobbityhat · 13/12/2011 22:32

Yes, obv not to be a regular thing.

I just think it is under-used and forgotten about. Perhaps there should be some sort of big advertising campaign for map?

I had a friend of mine (in her 40s) telling me how worried she was after previous night mishap with condom. She hadn't even thought of map!

Its odd isn't it, especially if the end result would be an abortion. I know they are expensive but they're so important. Defnitely should be a campaign to raise awareness, i think they're just worried it will be used as contraception - though at £30 a go that would not seem financially viable for many!

Jojay · 13/12/2011 22:37

Me. Years ago. I remember vomiting a lot. I think they give out anti nausea drugs with it now.

My Mum found me puking, I confessed and she told me I'd been very sensible Grin

oreocrumbs · 13/12/2011 22:39

Once, in Australia when I was travelling (can't remember if it was available in the UK then). Had no side effects, and the fact that in the sober light of day I had to haul myself to a pharmacy and pay hard earned dollars for it did no harm in reminding me to be bloody careful next time!

But seriously, I have used it as it is designed - a one off in a long history of being sensible with contraception. And I'm thankful it is there.

I really would like to know if there are people who use this as a 'regular' form of contraception? I can't see it being that many - but then again I really don't know.

FestiveFriedaWassailsAgain · 13/12/2011 22:43

I have taken it twice. I was 30 the first time Blush I felt so embarrassed, no ill effects.

In my defence, it was the first shag after having a baby, and I had just totally forgotten that I wasn't on the pill and I wasn't pregnant Second time was when I realised my coil was missing so I took it in case it had fallen out.

In many areas you can get it free from a pharmacy, but you need to ask.

Always free from family planning clinic, walk in centre, GP as well.

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 13/12/2011 22:49

I too have taken it twice, 1 when I was at university and about 20, and once when dh and I had an accident close after dd was born......I felt as stupid in my 30's although it was far easier to get.

rushofbloodtothefeet · 13/12/2011 22:59

Once, and it gave me the one and only migraine I've ever had - completely floored me, couldn't do anything but lie in a darkened room for 2 days feeling like I was going to die if my head moved even a fraction. Thank god I was at my Mum's at the time and she administered full on TLC.

SucksToBeMe · 14/12/2011 11:28

Same as figroll after DS was born. Now planning %232 with same partner. It was just too soon after %231 to risk it.

Flisspaps · 14/12/2011 11:32

Yes, once, DH and I had a condom split and the Boots pharmacist gave me her best catsbummouth as she dispensed it and told me I should use contraception in the future...Confused

DiscoDaisy · 14/12/2011 11:33

I've only used it once in an emergency after the condom split.
It didn't work and I now have a lovely 7 yr old DS as a result.

SucksToBeMe · 14/12/2011 12:03

That's peculiar I meant %23 not %

SucksToBeMe · 14/12/2011 12:04

Sod it, the phone is switching it. I mean number 1/2 not percent!

Cutelittlecatlover · 14/12/2011 12:50

I took it once after a split condom, about 10 years ago. My period came a week early but no side effects apart from that.

Bramshott · 14/12/2011 12:53

Of course. Has anyone not?!

Naoko · 14/12/2011 15:53

Three times - twice after condom failure and once after waking up and realising I'd missed a pill 36 hours prior. Got one prescribed by an OOH GP who was completely unsympathetic to my stress, and got the other two from Boots. The pharmacist was lovely.

One of them made me feel ill, and I ended up having to explain to my mum what was wrong with me. Was worried she might be judgy or whatever but she just gave me a hug and said she'd had one when she was younger and spent three days throwing up, so that was easier than I thought!

The first time I was really worried and embarrassed by it but I was only 18. These days I refuse to be - I don't want to be pregnant, I had sex which is nothing to be embarrassed about, so the MAP is the sensible and responsible thing to do.

TheChristmasTreeSurgeonsMate · 14/12/2011 16:06

So few MAPers on MN! I've taken it several times. It is interesting, and might be important to know, that the name is a misnomer - it's still worth taking even the morning after the morning after.

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 14/12/2011 16:43

I have. It was fine.

Also, I just walked into Boots. The Pharmacist was lovely. She explained (in her little private room) that if I couldn't afford to pay the £20 charge, she could give me a list of clinics in the area that would provide it for free.

TessOfTheGerbilvilles · 14/12/2011 16:57

I have.

I missed a pill and then had a mad panic about it. I had an emergency appointment to see my GP who prescribed it immediately. No side effects other than feeling a bit crampy. I was 23 (so four years ago), just about to finish my disseratation at uni and right at the start of my relationship with DP.

It was fantastic knowing that support option was there in an emergency.

Now I use a diaphragm and the MAP would be of no use to me whatsoever because I wouldn't know there had been an 'error' until I realised I was pregnant! However we are now in the position that although not TTC it would be a happy accident.

1Catherine1 · 14/12/2011 22:52

I have - twice.

Very glad I did as my life would be very different now had I not. I wouldn't have been able to make the clean break I made from a very bad person. I was 17 Blush and I got it free from the young persons sex clinic. No side effects just a little bit of a telling off the second time and a reminder that it was the least reliable method of contraception and even less reliable each time it was used.

cornishpasty · 15/12/2011 11:59

I've taken it twice, both times after condom failure. First time was about 3 years ago and the second was 14 days ago! I'm still waiting for my period to arrive. It was due yesterday but I can sometimes have a 35 day cycle, so not panicking just yet.

Memoo · 15/12/2011 12:02

I have taken it....I still got pregnant though!

Labradorlover · 15/12/2011 13:09

Taken it twice. Once after condom failure and once after stupid recklessness/drunkeness ( 16 that time ) .
Also, years ago participated in a scheme where I was given MAP to keep at home in case of emergencies. Never needed, but I thought that was a great idea.
