So my DS has a very sore willy, its deep red colour and very swollen. He wnt let me touch it. Took him to the gp as emergency and as she tried to look at it he screamed and refused anyone to touch. He is in a lot of pain with is, walking funny and sit down very gently. She prescribed some anti-fungal cream but i don't quite agree with this, however I've just put some on him, or attempted. Cried his eyes out. He has always suffered with infections like bladder and to do with his willy. I've never been able to pull foreskin back, which I thought I was meant to but doctors have said I should.he's never let me always cried. I took him to a doctor a few months ago thinking he might need circumsision but she said no. * sorry about spelling, on my phone

Sometimes it's easoer to get cream on after a long warm bath, he might have a tight foreskin but this should ease with age, DS2 had one but know hes 4 it's fine. Good penis cleaning is key, pulling back the foreskine and shaking after a wee and washing it in clean warm water in the bath daily. A gentle salt bath can also help with any soreness. Nurofen should help with the swelling.

bamboobutton · 13/12/2011 19:58

if it's balanitis(which it sounds like) then the untifungal cream will sort it out.

only pull the foreskin back as far as it will go, dont force it.

minceorotherwise · 13/12/2011 20:01

Sounds like ballanitis (sp), my son used to get it a lot and if it's recurrent they said it might be because his foreskin was too small and if it kept happening he may have to be circumcised ( but think that was worse case scenario), he grew out of it anyway. But think cream is all they can do to help. Understand how hard it to get on as so painful, but we used to try an just get a big blob of it on the end ( sorry tmi) and then let him rub it in, or get it just before bed, stick nappy on so at least it could have some effect overnight. Could you blob some on while he is sleeping ?

yummicheddars · 13/12/2011 20:19

I'm going to try when I change his nappy before I go to bed. Its broke me out it tears, I've never seen anything like it, its a deep red purply and its simply awful. He is in so much pain, can't even sit down comfortably. Making me really upset n convince myself I'm a bad mum ( I'm 21 weeks pregnant so emotional) he has never had it before just infections and slight redness but this is so severe and it has got unbelievably worse as the days gone

keep his nappy off as much as possible tomorrow. my ds used to get this all the timebut hasn't had it once since he stpped needing nappies.

lostlady · 13/12/2011 21:07

I would call again if if is really bad: antibiotics might be needed if it's infected and should be treated quickly.

rushofbloodtothefeet · 13/12/2011 21:12

My son had a very similar sounding infection, and he was put on ABs right away. He was much more comfortable within 24 hours and the swelling and redness was gone within 48.

yummicheddars · 13/12/2011 21:14

She said he doesn't need antibiotics just the cream. It is sever I have never ever seen anything so bad. It actually looks like its lost flow of blood to it like a deep red purply. I am considering hospital tomorrow if no better. Its really scaring me he is in so much pain.

TBH I'd be considering calling the out-of-hours if it is that bad, could you try the NHS Direct helpline - they will contact OOH for you if they think it is needed.

minceorotherwise · 13/12/2011 21:18

That does sound bad. I would def get second opinion. Hope you're ok. Not you fault at all. Just one of those things

yummicheddars · 13/12/2011 21:19

Well he's asleep in bed. I have put a lot of cream on, I will change his bum again in about an hour and check it. Hoping the cream has eased it. He is still weeing so the doctor said that's a good thing

Well done for getting lots on. Hopefully in the morning it will have done it's job and he is less sore

JaneBirkin · 13/12/2011 22:00

I've only read the OP, but I wanted to reassure you that circumcision shouldn't, hopefully, be necessary - my GP told me that often it is something as simple as stopping using bubble bath. I don't have a clue why, but if your son repeatedly has these problems then perhaps that would be worth a go.

She even said she really hated Johnsons! as it was in her vast experience responsible for so many babies having sore willies. I didn't believe her but I stopped using bubble bath and the problem went away.

Good luck, it must be very difficult for you to see him in pain x

yummicheddars · 13/12/2011 22:42

I don't use bubble bath because he has sever eczema. All I use is water to bath him. I do use talc however, which I'm going to stop. Just changed him. No better. His dads just gt in from work and he cant believe how worse its got since he saw it at 1 o'clock. He agree hospital in morning if no better.

Oh poor thing Sad

Look maybe out of hours would be a good thing if it isn't improving. Do you think he will sleep?
I've not much idea about these things but I'm not sure if I read once that leaving it when it's very constricted can possibly cause some permanent damage - maybe you ought to take him to a&e?

Sorry, don't want to scare you, as I honestly have no idea, but being a worrier myself that would be my fear.

JaneBirkin · 13/12/2011 23:03

this has some straightforward info and is quite calmly written - sorry, I'm probably making you feel much worse, just the way you describe it it sounds fairly severe.

If in doubt, check it out as they say. Are you sure there's nothing caught round it? The link above says antibiotics might be indicated, at least.

minceorotherwise · 13/12/2011 23:07

Why don't you call NHS direct and get their opinion ?

yummicheddars · 14/12/2011 07:56

Morning. Thankyou all so much. Ok he slept through. I've not slept at all. Worrying and listening for him.I am at hospital this morning for my scan, so when I wake him up soon I will check if its no better he will be coming to hospital with us.

minceorotherwise · 14/12/2011 09:22

Oh glad he slept through. It should have calmed down a bit if the cream stayed on all night. hope he's ok

yummicheddars · 14/12/2011 13:21
