Ds has come home from school with a note saying that there is a case in his class.

What precautions can I take to prevent him (and the rest of us) catching it?

Hi PrettyCandles, apart from the usual washing of hands and under the nails theres nothing much you can do about your ds catching it, if your ds was in contact by touching the other childs hands theres a chance that he could catch it but high chances are that he wont't get it. If he does you can get a prescription that treats the whole family either tablet or medicine, which is one 5ml. You will then have another prescription for 2weeks later. As the first dose kills the threadworms but not the eggs, the second dose kills the new threadworms before they produce again in the intestine.

Yeah, there's nothing you can really do to prevent you catching it, except for the handwashing/nail trimming thing. Discourage thumb sucking if possible. Changing sheets and towels is wise, avoiding bare bottoms on soft furnishings, and vacuuming regularly all help reduce risk, but not by much.

It is worth being aware of the symptoms, most notably itchy bottom, particularly at night.

I read up on it last night - worse than headlice. Discouraging sucking is impossible in this family, especially at night, but at least they're both still in nightnappies.

I read that raw garlic and walnuts are supposed to be preventative, so we will all stink for the next few weeks.

Yeuck.
