horrendous one sided pain during period... what could it be?

it is not an EP, I know this because dh and I havent had sex thins month and I have no tube on the side affected. but for the last 6m or so my periods have been horrendously painful and erratic. for the last 18m they have been irregular, some months over a week late, others a week early. last month it was a week early, this month it was 4 days early. but the period pains are mainly one sided and enough to double me up, my skin is also much, much worse. as are my mood swings (I genuinely feel for dh) and I am exhausted. I also get terrible D&V.

WTF's going on? (ps, have cons appt in feb)

could be fibroids, I have pains in one side from them sometimes. but only if I drink a lot of coffee or soft drinks for some reason.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 10/12/2011 14:59

possibly, i have significant Xmas Hmm adhesions from my various ops. and my lack of fertility is a big indicator.

forgot to say, last month it was the other side (which got me all freaked out, as you can imagine)

Any pain that is cyclical in nature like this needs to be further evaluated by a gynae to see if endometriosis is present. Its a common cause of very painful and or heavy periods.

If you are not currently under the care of a gynae specialist the GP should refer you to such a person. This problem is not within the GPs remit.

I note too you have adhesions; these can also tether organs together and cause pain to arise.

I'm going back to see my old cons in feb (its lissie btw) to try to get to the root of my SIF, and have requested a laproscopy rather than another HSG. I also have a pelvic scan booked for thursday as well as the standard bloods. They discovered the adhesions 5y ago when I had my ep, but I was still getting up the pole then, so they have never been treated. However, things were a mess in there.

Have they suggested Endometriosis?

chipstick10 · 10/12/2011 18:34

I had the most horrendous periods and sometimes such intolerable pain i would cry on the bathroom floor. Also deep deep pain on one side. It turned out i had severe endemetriosis and one of my ovaries was covered with it.

Tenebrist · 10/12/2011 18:38

A scan won't reveal endometriosis but a laparoscopy will. One-sided pain is a classic symptom of endo (once EP etc has been ruled out).

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 10/12/2011 18:56

You know, I've been suspecting endo for a while, it can't be good for my uterus to keep getting implanted, then deplantes. I will insist on a laproscopy then. Been round the block once already and this is the only test (apart from chicago/nk cell) they haven't done.

I have this monthly the pain was so bad I used to vomit and pass out, loads of scans lap etc all at wrong time of month so all inconclusive really I wonder why Hmm
I started Cezerrate and all has been fine since but one gyne thinks it was bowel related Hmm really want that one explained to me but it is not his area of speciality

SugarBabyLove · 10/12/2011 20:50

I have pain on my side, but when I ovulate. Eg, pain on left side, around day 13/14 which lasts for a day, then next month the other side, around the same time in my cycle. You are defo talking about days 1 to 7 of menstrual cycle though? What's D&V?

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 10/12/2011 21:01

its totally different to ov pain, its like a sharp cramp. and from right before my period until it finishes. D&V is diarrhoea and vomiting.

interesting that it might be to do with my digestive system too though

Liss he never really explained but I guess everything in that area can become connected, but I also wondered was it hormone related

Luminescence · 10/12/2011 21:07

Which side is it?

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 10/12/2011 21:22

luminescence, it varies, last month it was my right side and more central, this month it is my left and right at the side.

apparently IBS can be affected by your periods and is often triggered by hormone changes.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 10/12/2011 21:24

could it be a cyst as they grow/enlarge etc with your hormones?

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 10/12/2011 22:33

Would the pain move though?

Its not unknown by any means for endometriosis to be mistaken for IBS. Endo can also play havoc with the bowels and intestines.

OriginalChristmasPoster · 11/12/2011 09:51

Poor you, it sounds horrible.

I ignored a pain like this for years, then collapsed when i was out alone with all 4dcs ad dog, and had to be taken in as an emergency by ambulance.

It was a twisted cyst due to endometriosis.

Get yourself properly investigated, I'm a lot better after treatment, and wish I'd gone to see about it years before.

Hope you feel better soon.

bruffin · 11/12/2011 09:55

I had something similar. It went in cycles and each month it got worse and I had temperatures. Then it would reach a peak and go back to not so bad.
I had a scan which showed endometrial cysts. I was told I was perimenopausal and it was not endometriatus and they wanted me to have s marina coil which I refused.
I had a theory that each month the cysts were growing and then eventuality bursting. It went on for 2 years and then seemed to get better. I do have other symptoms of endometriatus so not sure why they dismissed it.
Periods are still heavy and painful but not like they were. I get ibs type symptoms a few days before my period.

OriginalChristmasPoster · 11/12/2011 09:56

The pain can move.

Endo can upset your bowel, mine was all stuck to my uterus, ovaries, tubes etc.

My cysts were large, like melons. I lost pounds in weight just by having them out...

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 11/12/2011 13:25

Thank you all so much. Would it have shown up on a hysteroscopy? Because they discovered lesions as well a while ago (no surprise really that after 6.5y there's still no baby, eh?!)
