Zyrtec and babies

My ds (8 months) has eczema and is allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts. I am breastfeeding and I don't eat any of these things either. He has a probiotic daily. His eczema has got a little better in the month we have been doing this (given up milk for longer) but he still has stubborn spots. His paed reckons these won't go away while he is still in the habit of scratching them and wants me to give him 2ml of zyrtec daily for a week to break the itch/scratch/itch cycle and give his skin chance to recover. I wondered if anyone else had given zyrtec to a baby under 1 year old and if it makes them drowsy or hyper (ie when should I give the daily dose). Thanks in advance.

Probably not much help as i gave my ds Zyrtec at the age of 3. It didn't make him drowsy, zyrtec is supposed to be one thats least likely to cause drowsiness. My ds took it for severe hayfever but tbh it didn't have much effect but then none of the antihistamines did. I wouldn't worry too much but you could always talk to your doctor again and ask anything your concerned about.

bobthebaby,my ds 13mos also has excema and is allergic to eggs and nuts, have my suspicions about milk but he still has organic cows milk twice daily.

I was interested to know what probiotic you give and where you get it,as I'd like to start ds on it.
Sorry I have no experience of zyrtec,we're on steroid cream twice a day which doesn't seem to be doing anything at hte moment.

POlly 28 Hi, I give him a supplement called Botanaflor which my paed imports from the US. It's got lots of other insoluble fibres and nutrients in it. TBH I think that the one's you get from a health food shop are good, but they have to be kept in the fridge whereas Botanaflor don't. I just break the gel cap in half and mix the powder with some pear puree and give it to him before his feed. Then I pop the cap together again for next time. I would highly recommend them as they give lovely poos if nothing else.

I looked at the Zyrtec website and it is licensed in the US for babies over 6 months for "indoor allergies", so I took him indoors and gave it to him. He's kind of gone a bit spacey and then fallen to sleep with absolutely no messing, so I think I may give it at night next time.

Thanks bobthebaby,I'll have to see if I can get ds some probiotic. His excema is getting worse at hte moment and will probably resort to wet wrapping his legs as he's scratching so much.I don't think the central heating is helping an "indoor allergy " perhaps
