Is this hand, foot and mouth disease?

DS is 13 months and has a rash around his mouth/nose and on his chin - it looks like red pustules, quite poxy-looking. He also has it on his bottom - I thought it was nappy rash at first, but it's the same kind of spots as on his face, so I'm wondering if it's HFMD. He hasn't got anything on his hands or feet though and won't let me look in his mouth to see for ulcers (I'm going to try and look when he's asleep). Last night he was very irritable and seemed to be in pain - ended up in bed with me. He hasn't got a fever though. I'm not sure if it meets the criteria for HFMD or not - can anyone advise? Should I take him to the doc tonight do you think? I know if it is HFMD they won't do anything, but do I need to go in case it's something else?

Could it be chicken pox? I'd take him, just to find out one way or another.

I thought of that, but he hasn't got any spots on his back or chest/tummy, and don't they normally start there with chicken pox? Might make him an appointment for tonight though.

My dd got chicken pox days before her first birthday. They were mostly around her mouth and nose and on her forehead, with the other main area around her groin. She only had a handful on her body. She went quiet, sleepy and clingy.

Do any of the spots have a blister in the middle?

doesn't sound like it. a few things it could be, none much to worry about but i'd see your GP to double check

I have had hand foot and mouth and it doesn't sound like this is it. I had tiny blisters on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet along with massive ulcers in my mouth. My dd, 18 months, also has the same rash around her face and on her bottom and we were told by the GP it could be teething rash or eczema.

HFMD attacks the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, bottom and mouth.
Given that DS is 13 months, could it be a rash from dribbling/teething?

One of my sons broke out in nappy rash every time he teethed, he sucked his fingers and consequently we had blister around the mouth from drool. I found a mix of bepanthen/vaseline was the best solution for the bottom.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. I took him to the doc tonight and it's impetigo! I'm a bit confused as to how it's on his bottom as well as his face, but that's the verdict. So I have to get some foul-tasting antibiotics into him four times a day for a week...just hope we don't catch it!!
