just been advised by my gp to cut out the sprouts this christmas as apparently they inhibit the absorption of thyroxine.
great news for me as i hate the little green bullets!
managed to get 2 months supply as well, why do they insist on only allowing one month at a time, such a pain.

My gp always prescribes two months worth - i thought it was standard.

timidviper · 07/12/2011 22:45

NHS guidance is that all medication should be supplied in 28 day supplies. Some surgeries double up at this time of year if the next prescription would be due around the holidays

NotMostPeople · 07/12/2011 22:46

Oh no, I love sprouts!

Fo0ffysFestiveShmooffery · 07/12/2011 22:47

I always get 3 months at a time Confused

Good advice about the sprouts though. Useful Grin

IwishIwasmoresparkly · 07/12/2011 22:48

Whoopee!

Even now at the grand old age of 35, my Dad insists that I have 3 sprouts at Christmas - I now have the perfect excuse to not have any Xmas Grin

catpark · 07/12/2011 23:37

Strange, I always get 8 weeks worth at a time. It would be better if they prescribed more that that at a time.

zanz1bar · 08/12/2011 14:19

sprouts are part of the goitercentric(spelling!) foods and also include swede(no loss)and dam it peanuts!
learn something new everday on google.

Nooooooo! Xmas Shock I'm vegetarian and sprouts are one of my favourite bits of the dinner I'm still able to eat - as long as they're cooked right, that is; fair enough if they're just boiled to death they are little green parcels of evil. Sod it, I'm going to eat them anyway, surely it can't do any damage eating them one day, dear only knows how many times I've forgotten to take the stuff, which can't exactly help with absorption either, let's face it Xmas Blush

QOD · 09/12/2011 22:45

oooooooooooh I like sprouts darn it!
I get 2 months at a time, I understand the whole paying for each prescription but as they are free because of the nature of the condition, I managed to wangle 2 months.

I think they don't much like giving you more at a time as they can be fairly dangerous drugs in the wrong hands and to make sure you don't overdose?

TapirBackRidersJinglyBells · 10/12/2011 14:28

My local primary care trust has a policy of 2 months supply. Apparently as we are grown up, we can be trusted with that much. Xmas Hmm

camdancer · 10/12/2011 16:34

I always get prescribed 100 tablets. It's very annoying as the tablet packs are 28 so I always have tiny bits of a pack.

Yay for no sprouts. MIL already has the sprouts cooking, so I could do with an excuse to leave them!

PeelThemWithTheirMithrasKnives · 10/12/2011 23:29

Sorry sprouts haters, Thyroid Society says they only have to be avoided in large quantities so probably Christmas Dinner amounts are okay - particularly if MILs do soggy ones as thorough cooking destroys the goitrogenic elements!

I think PeelThemetc post should be deleted by mumsnet you wicked girl!!
