Blardy annoying cough - I can't shake it, any advice?

I had a cold which started about three and a half weeks ago. The cold is long gone (I had antibiotics last week for a sinus infection) - everything is cleared up except for a bloody infuriating dry cough. It is on and off during the day, at the moment, for example I am coughing every couple of mins, then I can go for hours without coughing. My throat is not sore or tickly, it feels more like my chest is tickly if that makes sense!

Can anyone advise on how to get rid of it or if I need to go back to my GP - I don't feel ill at all though so feel it would be a waste of time ATM.

Thanks Smile

I've had this, I took Pholocodiene. It's a cheap syrup containing codiene which is a cough suppressant.

I took one dessert spoon every few hours and it got rid of it. It got to the stage I was exhausted and couldnt talk to patients without coughing everywhere. (podiatrist not Dr).

If it doesnt help see your GP.

I had this and have only just managed to get rid of it after the best part of month too. I eventually caved (ie my colleagues were sick and tired of me coughing my guts up so nagged me into making an appointment and I reluctantly went feeling very embarassed at wasting GP's time) and went to my GP. GP prescribed an inhaler as it was apparently down to irritation in my lungs caused by the long gone cold so the visit was actually justified. My coughing fits were triggered by talking and going in/ out of warm/cold environments so night times weren't so bad. It was bloody exhausting though and a real challenge to my pelvic floor which quite frankly was not up to the job!

wish i knew the answer. I've had this cough since the beginning of October. Had a course of antibiotics in November as I was so run down, even though my chest was clear. I am still coughing and its worse again today......I'm slowly coming to accept that its going to be around a while :-(

Right, I think I'll try pharmacist first for the pholocodeine first and If that doesn't help then back to the GP! Thanks for the advice everyone and hope you feel better soon stump.

I'm usually a complete cynic with homeopathic remedies, but Weleda's Drosera tablets really work for me when I've got a dry cough. Might be worth a try.

If it has been around this long please go and see your GP again. The general advice is that a persistent cough that has been around for more than three weeks needs looking into.

I agree with bunbaker my mum has had a persistant cough for weeks. Hers, it turned out, was her asthma and she got different inhalers which sorted her out, so please go and see your GP
