Losing hair because of chemotherapy

Hi everyone. Am in hospital and undergone a week of intensive chemotherapy.

My head is now very headsore and I have noticed lots of single strands of hair falling out as I touch my hair

Is the the normal starting process of what happens when you lose your hair?

There is none on my pillow yet and not falling out in the shower but head really sensitive, as is my skin

I dont know if thats how it starts but if your scalp gets sore and easily irritated Phillip Kingsley do a no scent/colour/perfume shampoo which he developed for his wife when she had chemo.

Hi Seeing Stars.

Yes, that's the start of it, sorry. I didn't realise you had gone and started already. Thinking of you and hoping you don't feel too bad.

Remember it returns. x

RedRosie · 06/12/2011 16:24

Oh poor you. It's not the same for everyone - my DH had an early quite sudden loss of hair after the end of his first chemo treatment and it was very sore. My DM had the soreness but not major hairloss.

It will come back as cakesandale says. These days will pass. So sorry that so many people are going through so much.

Hello stars. Sorry you're losing your hair. Does sound about right from what I remember. How are you feeling apart from that? Is this day 2? x

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/12/2011 16:40

stars - just to let you know we're thinking of you xxxxx

topsytinselturner · 06/12/2011 17:39

Stars that's exactly how mine started . Sore scalp and a few bits of hair .
I ended up clipping my hair quite short as the length of it was making my head sore !

I finished chemo last month and I already have a healthy head of stubble !

How is going for you ? Smoothly so far ?

How long before you finish the course, stars? I hope they're pleased with how you're reacting. Must be very tough being in the middle of it all. xx

Hi Smee. Expecting to be in hospital for another four to six weeks. Getting bored now. treatment horrendous and I am deteriorating now, but have to get worse before I get better.

Hi, when my Mum had chemo her hair started falling out slowly but accelerated, I cut it for her (didn't do a bad job if I say so myself) as falling out short hair seemed easier to cope with. After a couple of weeks though she got really fed up with it and decided to shave the lot off!
It's a bit traumatic seeing yourself bald for the first time, but Mum had a couple of wigs but generally wore hats when out which looked really good.

smee · 08/12/2011 14:24

Oh no..! Though I guess you were expecting it? Not that that makes it any easier. Sad Four to six weeks is a heck of a long time. Are the ward staff nice? Are there others there facing similar?? Takes you through Christmas too, which is a shame. Have you any idea when you might start to pick up? I used to find it ever so helpful knowing that I'd start to climb out of the dip again iyswim. Sort of made it more manageable. I know you're on different chemo though.

btw, I'm good thanks. A year out of treatment and feel 99% back to full health. Smile
