Can stress make you feel ill?

Am having a tough time lately DS, cp, deafbind has been poorly for 6 months. Apart from feeling exhausted have also got cramping stomach pains and feel nauseous most of the time, is it stress giving me IBS symptoms? TIA
BTW if I sit down I do feel a bit better but can't do this often. Feel awful today as I have to take DS and others to bloody Xmas party and I'm scared he wil throw a wobbly (v stressfull to watch)

Yes, stress def makes you ill - ibs is very common as a symptom. Can you get some more help (I know this is much easier said than done) like respite care so you get a break ? Cos you will get to the end of your resources otherwise

Mrsrobertduvall · 03/12/2011 13:38

Definitely.

Poor you. Hope you feel better.

south345 · 04/12/2011 04:24

Definately, someone I know had heart palpitations and muscle problems all caused by stress.

sleepatlast · 04/12/2011 04:36

Yes. Are you depressed too though? Go to see a gp you get on with. They can exclude non stress causes and give you advice on local resources. Do you have support? Not sure where in UK you live but there are local support groups usually for parents of children with a disability.often a great source of knowledge. Sorry to suggest this but ? Worth doing a pg test? . Hope you get some test soon.x

sleepatlast · 04/12/2011 04:37

Rest. Not test!

Thankyou for all your responses. I feel I should be upfront (I am 68 DH 65 hope this information will self destruct) we have 3 youngish adults with down syndrome who are sheer delight, 1 dc who is the cause of my distress and a 6yr old with Emmanuelle Syndrome a pickle but lovely. They are all adopted and loved so much. My biggest worry is DS who cries so much with neuropathic pain paedriatrician is brilliant but I can't moan to many people as they would say it is our own faul for taking them on. Sorry to moan but all I have is to be honest with you.
. If they could sort DS out I am sure I would feel better if stress can cause problems with my guts out

I have ibs and while it is definitely worse when I am stressed, certain foods cause problems too. I would suggest you ask for testing, particularly coeliac just to check there's not an underlying health issue causing/making you feel worse.

sleepatlast · 04/12/2011 19:15

Sorry...guess you don't need to do a preg test then. The children are blessed to have caring parents.there are many who wouldn't take on the challenges of adoption of children with medical problems. You are giving these children a chance of family life not the UK "care" system. Do see your gp.your age is relevant and a persistent change in bowel habit should be investigated. It may well me stress but an MOT sounds a good idea . Good luck with it all.x

2old2beamum · 04/12/2011 21:34

Thanks sleepatlast... what a load of gobbledegook I wrote but I think you got the gist. I too would be concerned about bowel cancer but we are doing a pilot scheme in this area on screening old farts for bowel cancer all clear 2months ago.
ago. Suppose I should visit GP but have an aversion to medication but might have to give in! Fortunately he is very good and supportive

I find eating Activia yoghurt really help my digestion. You can have tablets for ibs which help the spasms. While it's reassuring it's not bowel cancer, a trip to your GP would be advisable.

sleepatlast · 05/12/2011 21:33

Sorry you've got to try much harder to be an old fart these days;) the screening test is for people without symptoms and isn't appropriate for people with symptoms. It probably is something else though! I agree worth seeing your gp for check up.good luck with it all x

2old2beamum · 05/12/2011 22:13

Sleepatlast(wish it was me) spoke to GP who feels gut problems are linked with breast cancer 18+ yrs ago and then reconstruction a year later hernia are connected but totally agrees I am stressed and feels if DS's problems were sorted I would feel better. He has referred me to the plastic team and general surgical team and pain killers.
May I take this opportunity to thankyou all for listening I feel I can only talk to you as DH would worry himself silly if I told him and I can't cope with that as well! From the old fartxx

I got massively stressed for external reason and ended up with severe ins symptoms. Been given tablets and as cause of stress has gone they are diminishing.

Stress us v powerful.

Go to drs. They can rule out anything else but might also be able to help you recover.

Sending you relaxing thoughts

DoodleAlley · 05/12/2011 22:21

Sorry just realised you have spoken to drs. I think we cross posted. Or at least that's my excuse

2old2beamum · 05/12/2011 22:37
