Has anyone been referred to a dental hospital for a clunky/clicking jaw?

If so what was the outcome and treatment.

My dentist has referred me as my jaw clicks on one side when I open my mouth fully. I've tried using a dental mouth guard thing at night as I suspect I clench my jaw when sleeping but this hasn't helped.

When I got the letter from the dental hospital and phoned to make an appt. they seemed to be booking me into a facial pain clinic Confused but its not painful.

I'm a bit dental phobic anyway so a bit worried about what to expect

My dentist has offered a couple of times, but I've always refused. I don't want it, and he's got no problem with that.

I have a clicky jaw. No intention of getting anything done about it. Doesn't cause me any problems.

I had this in my teens. Was told it was weak muscle in the jaw that allowed some bit of tissue (teenagedom was a long time ago!) slip into joint and the clicking was it popping back out.

I was given a special mouth guard to wear at night and exercises to strengthen jaw muscle. Still clicks now though.

Oh I get that, not as bad as it was. Never even thought to get it checked tbh because it doesnt hurt or interfere with chewing.

MotherPanda · 02/12/2011 16:11

I was - they made me a night mouth guard as I grind my teeth in my skip, which makes the clunky jaw worse

I've always had a clicky jaw, isn't it hypermobility (double-jointedness)?
you should see what else i can do Grin

in any case, its never been a problem that my dentist has picked up on and i wouldn't bother doing anything about it at my ripe old age now anyway

Thanks everyone.

TBH I'm not quite sure why the dentist has referred me as its not a massive problem ATM. He probably explained at the time but because I'm always so nervous and desperate to get out of the chair I was probably half way out of the door by then!

It's very common to have some form of click, it's a complicated joint and bits are easily displaced. As long as it's not painful & doesn't interfere with function then no treatment is necessary.

Unless youre officially employed as a dentist on MN pls dont give advice of here grumpy im pretty sure it invalidates your GDC registration if indeed you have one

Grumpystiltskin · 02/12/2011 18:13

Umm, no it doesn't. You clearly have no idea what GDC registration is. Read the disclaimer at the top of the page regarding medical advice unless you are suggesting that no-one should post health questions or advice.
