So, randomly bought a blood sugar testing machine as was worried that he had lots of Type 2 symptoms. His levels are fine and within "normal". Yesterday morning, however, before breakfast, I thought I'd have a go. My level was 6.9 and googling seems to think this is a problem and I should go to the Dr!
Does anyone have any real knowledge of levels etc? Don't want to go to Dr if it is normal!
TIA!

As far as I understand, a fasting blood sugar reading, whereby you haven't eaten anything or drank anything with glucose/fructose for 12hrs should be under 7mmol/dL. Otherwise this can be indicative of diabetes or pre-diabetes. Also you have to be careful to have washed your hands 1st incase the reading isn't accurate.

I'd do a repeat and if it's still near the 7 mark just make an app with GP to run it by them. They'll do a urine and venous blood sample which is more accurate. Please try not to worry too much at this stage until you've had more tests tho ( stress puts blood sugar readings up also! )

Let us know won't you? X

Normal fasting levels are between 4 -6 so its a little high but not something to rush to a&e over. I'd test (fasting)for a couple more mornings and if its continually on the high side (or you are worried) book into see your GP to get an GTT and/or a ha1c test. Your DP seeing a doctor may also be a good idea as well (esp if those symptoms are the extreme ones of thirst, loss of weight etc) as levels may be normal or near normal in the morning but too high after eating or on average.

i am type 2 diabetic and my ha1c (or whatever its called ) is 6.9 go drs they will do test which averages out sugar levels for 13 weeks. they will try to control it by diet if still high metaformin

Tiredgranny HbA1C isnt an average, I.E if yours is 6.9 your sugar isnt on average 6.9 according to my chart its actually 8.4.

HbA1C Chart

Hb is expressed as a percentage that shows how good your control is and at the moment the doctors like it to be as close to 6 as possible (there was outrage among some of my patients years ago when they decided it should be close to 6 because it meant they had to start eating properly).

Op when my Dh was diagnosed his fasting was 7.2 and that was enough, you can also test 2 hours after eating too, glucose rises after a meal and then settles as the insulin kicks in. His only symptom was blurry vision for half an hour in the morning.

It's only a quick blood test to diagnose so you may as well see your gp, the sooner you get these things diagnosed the better.

Do a few more random readings, including fasting levels (ie where you've had nothing except water for 12 hours) and if you have readings above 7 then see your GP for blood tests.

To be diagnosed as diabetic you need 2 separate fasting VENOUS samples (not fingerprick samples) 7.0 or above.

Moodykat · 01/12/2011 23:13

Thanks all! Will test a few more times and see. Only had DS2 5 months ago though, wouldn't they pick it up then with all the blood tests?

It depends if anyone ticked the box for glucose or HbA1c levels.

I'm not diabetic but my sugar goes up to 7 sometimes 2hours after food but my HbA1c is 5.2. My gp monitors me due to polycystic ovaries.

Honestly don't worry just see the dr and see what they think, they'll be relieved to see someone who doesn't want antibiotics for a cold.

Sidge · 02/12/2011 16:38

You wouldn't usually have your HbA1C routinely tested in pregnancy, and unless the midwife picks up some glucose in your urine they're unlikely to request a blood glucose either.

It's OK for blood sugars to rise a couple of hours after food, even up to about 9 - it's when they don't come down again that we worry!
