Eczema and cows milk

I have been struggling for a while now with my sons eczema - i have tried various creams, scratch mitts obsessive hoovering and detergent free washing powder. Nothing seemed to make much of a difference and my poor baby was clearly very bothered by the itchy sore skin.

I just wanted to mention , in case anyone else finds this helpful that cutting out diary from my diet (I'm breastfeeding) and the formula we use for the 10:30 feed has had a dramatic effect - the eczema has almost completely cleared. If anyone else has tried this and had the same result please let me know- I am hoping it's not some sort of fluke! I guess nothing works for everyone all of the time but I am over the moon by this.

lehman cutting out dairy products are well known for relieving a range of problems including eczema, psoriasis, ibs etc. Although we are bought up to believe that drinking cows milk is good for you, its not! Google the film 'white lies' and try drinking milk again!

Would you ask a new mother for a pint of human breast milk for you cornflakes? then why do we do it for a completely different spieces of animal? No other animal on planet earth drink any milk after infancy. Dont believe the calcium crap either.

In the US they drink more milk per head of population than any other country yet still have a higher instance of osteoporsis than any other nation!

yes, 25 years ago I did this when my son had eczema.

Just be aware that you might be short of calcium- I found I had low bone density in mylate 40s and I amsure that my dairy free years contributed to that, even though i was taking calcium supplements- propbably not enogh though.

Most people find that it is only cow's milk that causes the problem, so you could try goat or sheep milk.

Hey lehman, I have eczema myself and have been told to avoid dairy products as much as possible because they are a possible trigger. I've also been told that in some cases Tropical fruits can be a trigger too. Just google "Tropical Fruits and Eczema". I've also gotten some pretty handy tips in from the www.badskinsolutions.com blog but I don't know if its to early to start with that for a baby.

I really hope you find more cures because eczema really is annoying, if you have any other questions i'll be happy to answer them

I was told by a prof of allergy that goats milk is too similar to cows, and sheeps is okay.

soya and coconut milk are both ok depending on age of dc. Alpro do a 1+ soya milk which my dd has been bought up on and is very healthy despite psoriasis and eczema being prevelant in dw's family. . as for calcium def its a lack of vit d that causes it not lack of milk. the body cant process the calcium from your food without vit d. I'm pushing 50 , been vegan for 9 years, had bone scan last year as part of research into dairy free diet and my bone density was higher than would normally be expected for my age etc. so thats all a myth.

ameliagrey · 01/12/2011 22:47

Bone density is down to all kinds of things not simply intake of calcium- your lifetime weight, exercise styles and genes play a huge part.

Osteoporosis is not often found in women who are heavier- over 9 stones. I have weighed 7.5 st all my life- but have a healthy BMI of around 19.4.

If you have a vegan diet you probably eat lots of other foods that are good for calcium intake- nuts, dried fruit and greens.

My DS has excema and he has been on Alpro soya junior for a few months now. His excema has completely disappeared!
I am now introducing bio washing powder and all seems to be fine.
No idea if the cows milk was triggering it or not,he may have just grown out of it.
We also only give him a bath a couple of times a week.
Cheap porridge oats in a pop sock then swilled around the bath/used as a sponge are very soothing to the skin btw.

Thanks everyone! I like the porridge oat idea in particular as I have really struggled to find something to wash him with.. The aqueous cream seems to make it worse. I will watch out for tropical fruits as well.
