When is a child classed as overweight?

Just wondering, as dd who is 15 months is 27lbs and is on the 91st centile for weight but on the 98th for height. She was 8.10 at birth.

If she stays on the 91st centile at say 5 will she then be classed overweight or does it depend on the comparison to height?

I don't think she is 'fat' and the HVs seem to be happy with her weight etc.

I'd be grateful for your views.

my view is ignore centiles and don't worry about it

you will know if a kid is fat just by looking at them .. its fairly obvious

Sounds as if she's in proportion, and as long as her weight remains in proportion to her height then there's not much to worry about.

I think if her height is on a lower centile than her weight then proportionately she is lighter than average. But I am no statistician!

I do sometimes wonder what criterias are used to define overweight. Don't they say 1 in 5 pre-school children are overweight? I hardly ever see a child I consider overweight. Do you?

I see loads of overweight kids but wouldn't worry about a baby of 15 months.

My Dd1 weighed 30lb at 18 months and was also on around the 91st centile in height she was just bigger than most children her age but never fat.

Your Dd sounds fine to me, i wouldn't worry.

My Dd2 is only 7 months and already 21 lb !!
