Okay, so my 2.5 year old has really nasty loose stools a couple of times a day - i was wondering if there could be something i could change in his diet that might help. A typical day could be

Shreddies and banana with semi skimmed milk.

handful of grapes.

ham and cheese on best of both bread.
humzinger fruit stick
fromage frais
well diluted juice

plain biscuit and milk

homemade slamon fishcakes with baked beans

this is roughly average of what he might eat in a day - any suggestions?

Just joining in in solidarity: ds is 2.3 and rarely does solid poos. However, he is happy and healthy and I am almost never worried about it any more, although hearing from some more mums in a similar position is definitely gladdening. He had diarrhoea a little while ago and having experienced that I now know for sure what is a sign of proper illness rather than just normal splurgey poos. At the risk of offering tmi, he might 'go' 4 times in a day, and cover the spectrum from solid to icky within those 4.

Welcome to this exclusive club, Lio!! Having posted that DD1 has begun to have some firmer stools recently - the last one was squishy mania - ewwwwwwww!

gingernut · 09/01/2006 19:37

Lio, my ds1 used to do up to 6 squashy poos on a normal day when he was first on solids. These days (he is now 4) he still does 2 or 3 most days. When he had diarrhoea it was definitely quite different (many more very watery and offensive-smelling poos...his normal poos smell horrible but this was on a different plane IYSWIM!).

Anyone else using washable nappies though, or do I win in the ickiness stakes?

Sidonie · 10/01/2006 11:37

I concure with Mae1. Sloppy poos can be a sign of constipation. Old, hard, compactated poo forms an obstruction in the bowel and the fresher, more recent poo is squeezed around it to expell it from the body. It does happen and is not uncommon and should be considered if only to be ruled out.

Lio - I did try washables but got fed up with the mess and anyway ds1 was allergic to the wraps I had so I gave up.

I think a trip to the quack to ask the constipation question is in order. MN-ers rule, glad you started the thread cathyspam.

My son who is 3 also has very loose stools and has been like it since birth. Finally got a paediatrician and he done tests. Came back with no allergies, he's now waiting to see a hospital paediatrician to see what's going on with his bowels xx
