Hi, I have just slipped on my stairs carpet and landed quite heavily on my lower back. I have bruised it a bit. I am 20 weeks pregnant, and although I am sure it wasn't that bad I am a bit worried, obviously!

I am supposed to go to work tonight, but I remember from a similar fall previously I suffered bad after effects, my whole body was sore, I think from adrenanline or something. Do you think I should stay home and rest just to be on the safe side or am I overreacting?

Any advice gratefully received, would call the GP but it's Sunday!

I would be inclined to stay home, unless you will be worrying at home and might be better at work.

Is your job an office job or more physical one?

Babies are really well protected, so you should be absolutely fine, but if you get any strange twinges phone your local OOHs service, or ask at the maternity unit of local hospital for advice.

I fell head over heels down a full flight of stairs when I was 20 weeks pregnant with DD1, went to hospital in a panic but the doc said that at that stage the baby is well protected by the amniotic fluid (liken it to a washing machine!). Said to look out for bleeding. If you are worried I'm sure they will listen to the baby's heartbeat?

I felt very stiff and sore the day after though - ouch!

Thanks for replying, I'm thinking it wasn't so bad as to hurt the baby, but wondering whether to go to work? It is involving a lot of standing, and from experience I expect it to hurt more later, like you, rabbit!

I would probably go in if I wasn't pregnant, but I feel like maybe I should take it easy. Am I just looking for a way out of going? It give3s you a fright as well, doesn't it!

I will wait a bit, have a bath maybe then see, thanks again.

Decided to take day off. Called nhs direct but they said unless it's urgent they will call back in 4 hours so unless I experience cramps or any bleeding I will just take it easy at home.

Thanks for all advice Smile

I'd take the time off, think it's a valid excuse myself :)
