i think she's forcing herself to be sick!

i didn't know where to post this, but i thought it might be best here!

dd is 20 months old. she now no longer wants to be put to bed at the set time she's been in for months. she has a peg due to severe reflux and is put on to the pump at night as soon as she goes to bed. but if she's playing up she will be sick. she can do this 3-4 times, each time needing to go in the bath as it gets in her hair (which is very long). i've tried to go in after she's asleep to put the pump on to see whether this helps, but no matter how quietly i try to do it i think she senses me being there and wakes up. the other problem we have is that it's also medicines she has just before going to bed that she brings up. HELP! dp shouts at her for being sick at bedtime but i don't agree with him doing this.

i really don't know about the whole b eing sivck, or what a peg is... but with regards to having a bath because of her hair.. tie it up!

colditz · 05/01/2006 22:12

Maybe the stress of doing something she doesn't want to do is making her reflux worse, or crying is agitating it?

Your Dp shouldn't be shouting at a baby for being sick, that is not on.

hercules · 05/01/2006 22:13

I agree with colditz. And shame on your dp.

soapbox · 05/01/2006 22:16

I've never understood how anyone can make themselves be sick. On alcohol ridden nights I have tried to make myself sick to avoid a hangover the next day but even with hands down my throat haven't managed it.

I think it is highly unlikely that a 20month old would have mastered the act, don't you?

Even if she is making herself sick, isn't that an important message too?

As far as your DP is concerned, I'm with Colditz too! Disgraceful!

soapbox · 05/01/2006 22:17

In fact, I imagine it is a reaction to one of the medicins she is taking!

mummytosteven · 05/01/2006 22:21

I really don't think that she is consciously making herself sick. Probably a combination of the crying and the reflux is causng this. Could you speak to HV/Paed about this problem?

kreamkrackers · 05/01/2006 22:24

there's no new medicines though and the pump is at the same speed its always been at. she's started screaming when she goes to bed, but she's not usually one to cry ever. my dp says shes making herself be sick but i don't know whats going on. we argue about it as i don't know what to think but he thinks she does it on purpose. i know she doesn't want to go to bed at that time anymore, she's started to become very clingy to me as well lately.

i don't know what a h/v or anyone would have to say about this, it sounds daft. at least on here i feel like i can try to get other mums opinions on the matter.

kreamkrackers - my dd is the same age, and has severe reflux (no peg feeding, yet - although this has been suggested).
Have you got a SALT who specialises in feeding difficulties who maybe could advise? Or maybe a paed community nurse who is experienced in G-tube feeding?

Aloha · 05/01/2006 22:27

What time does she go to bed?

terryschonkyorange · 05/01/2006 22:28

what about speaking to the paed who fitted the peg?

soapbox · 05/01/2006 22:30

Is it possible that she is getting distressed because she know's she is going to be sick?

I can't imagine many children being happy at being sick, bathed and changed several times in one night!

kreamkrackers · 05/01/2006 22:30

nothing. the hospital put the peg in back in july but apart from seeing the cardiollogy team and being in and out of hospital with chest infections we don't see anybody. i did see a consultant paediatrician in our local area the other day but i forgot to mention this to him. there's not much after care support around here.

she enjoys going in the bath! i just don't understand why its started happening before going to sleep. it's always been when she wakes up, which i can understand as it would be horrible to wake up with a full stomach. she doesn't do it as often in the mornings now.

What about your GP - maybe they could refer you on to someone?

kreamkrackers · 05/01/2006 22:35

she goes to bed at 8, dp only gets in at 7 n wants to spend time with her before she goes to bed. the doctor who put it in has never got back in touch. at the moment i'm trying to get in touch with the dietican, but i never get a reply after leaving answer machine messages.

gp is a waste of space, i'm trying to change my gp as well at the moment.

maybe the secretary to the doctor who put it in could advise how to get a further appointment/further assistance? or local PALs service could help (Patient Liaison and Advocacy). Or your HV should be able to arrange referrals.

kreamkrackers · 05/01/2006 22:43

i'll try talking to my health visitor then tomorrow, maybe it's just best to go to her and see what she comes up with. i really don't know what they can suggest. she's on anti-sickness medicines and is on a slow pump, it should be on 40mls/hr but i've only got it on 30mls/hr. this stays on for 12hrs. i think i'd understand it more if i'd changed her routine but i've not and she's been in this routine for months.

kk - it might be worth posting something similar to this on the SN board (mums familiar with peg feeding more likely to see it there). I agree with MTS, it's definitely worth persisting with GP/HV as there will be someone out there who can help and advise you.

Coping with the vomiting is grim, I hope it gets easier for you soon. Chonky x
