Platelet count high

DH has just had to have his annual blood tests repeated as his platelet count was high. The retest was done on Tuesday, today we've had a note to say contact doc (closed now til Monday) as it is higher. DH is not unwell, no signs of infection. What else could a high platelet count mean?

I wouldnt worry too much, if it was anything bad they would have given you a form and sent you to hospital phlebotomy dept.

Here we are worried that my dhs platelet count is low, he also has cancer so its abit worrying. What is your dhs count? My dh is currently 51, he had a repeat test y/day.

I don't know what the figures were I'm not sure he even asked (typical bloke). He's got to speak to the GP on Monday.

I hope your DH is ok.

Hi Hellshas, is you dh having annual testing for a reason? I believe platelet count can be up to 150, when it drops below 25/30 it is very worrying. My dh was 71 3 weeks ago, then 50 last week. Fingers xd this last test doesnt show us another drop.

winnybella · 26/11/2011 23:46

Isn't it that they are higher when you have had an infection? Or when you have been excersizing before the test?

purplewednesday · 27/11/2011 07:34

Normal platelet counts are 150 - 400.

hellhasnofury · 27/11/2011 08:19

triplets He has to have annual tests as the medication he's on can affect his liver function. Fingers crossed your DH's are on the way back up.

winnybella no infection and definitely hadn't exercised before as the blood tests were early in the morning. All I know is that the first test showed raised levels and the second test, two weeks later, showed they'd risen again.

I think high platelets can mean infection/ inflammatory response but is not something that is usually of too much concern, certainly not in an urgent way.

insanityscratching · 27/11/2011 10:50

Dh has polycythaemia vera and so his count has been in excess of 600 although since being on aspirin and chemotherapy it's currently around 450.
I think a concern is if high the blood is more sticky and so an increased risk of thrombosis.
Dh has no symptoms really from the high platelets other than blurry vision at times but has excessive tiredness and gastro symptoms from the chemo.

hellhasnofury · 27/11/2011 11:33

Maybe that's why the concern then, DH had a DVT a few years ago and has had a TIA (mini stroke).
