constipation and piles after episiotomy

I had a forceps delivery 2wks ago and an episiotomy and since then I've been really constipated. I did aquire a small pile whilst pregnant but this morning I was sore down there, went to put some Anusol on it, and discovered I've got another, HUGE pile which is firm and sore! Got the shock of my life!

I know that this one is due to pushing from being constipated. After the birth I was quite sore down there and was scared of opening my bowels incase I busted my stitches open! But, nevertheless, I've always drank plenty of fluids and ate enough fibre. I've never had a problem with being bunged up before and have always gone to the loo once or twice a day. Maybe it's also cos I've been less mobile, though this has improved now.

When I go, a small sheep dropping comes out and it feels like there's more to come but it can't come out as if there's not enough room and I don't wanna strain! I tried lactulose but that didn't do anything and the syrup of figs isn't very effective either. I know all the things I need to eat to combat constipation.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Not sure if it's specific to the episiotomy or just pregnancy in general. What's the best way to get rid of piles? I'm thinking of sitting on some frozen veg next!

How about glycerine supposotries (sp), glycerine attracts water into the area so it might soften things up for you.

You could try a Fleet:

How long did you try the lactulose for? You need to take a few doses for it to start to have an effect. Movicol is also good at softening and bulking up. Liquorice and dried apricots good too. Your HV might be able to prescribe a more effective cream for your piles or else see the GP. They are much more effective than over the counter creams.

I would also recommend raising your feet when trying to go to the toilet. I always rest them on the bathroom bin. This should help you go.

Mate, I have been there. If I'd have known about mumsnet when I had ds I would have been posting the exact same thread. The constipation does ease with time, I was exactly the same, scared about busting my stitches. I remember weeing was agony cos of the friction caused by ds' head popping in and out. The piles do go as the constipation eases, I had some belters but they went over time. Make sure you're wearing loose fitting underwear and don't be tempted to squeeze! Let them go down naturally.

Sorry I'm not able to offer anymore practical advice but I do offer my sympathy and understanding!

Thanks girls. Think there's a suppository knocking about in a drawer somewhere! The lactulose was just half a bottle of leftovers that my husband had so I probably didn't have a big enough dose but the taste is dead sickly! Bought some fybogel today. I'll draw the line at a phosphate enema but my mw said she'd bring a microlax ( mini enema ) if I want.

Baberuthless, makes me feel bit better if things will clear up naturally. Just gotta find a Mr Muscle equivalent for my blocked plumbing......: /

I've been there too! Lactulose and fybrogel worked for me eventually. I also found it got better as I got more mobile.
