I am having the period from hell! For the last hour I have had heavy bleeding and a few smallish clot type things and it's day 4.
Is this normal?
What should I do????

I phoned the doctors for a home visit but they are all out and the receptionist seemed to think its not a big problem. Sad
She has given me a phone appointment.

I'm not a doctor but this will bump for you.

Could you be pregnant and having an early miscarriage? You could (shudders) try keeping the clots, I don't know if that would help to establish if it is a miscarriage.

If you take anything that might thin the blood (like aspirin for period pain or ginko bilbao ) might be best to stop.

It must be the season, or maybe heavy periods are becoming more and more the norm, which is why there are so many posts about it.

My sympathies. I have no advice, sorry. But clot type things does not sound ou of the ordinary.

You won't get a home visit for this as worried as i can understand you are.

When a period is heavy and flow is fast then it is normal and healthy for the bodies clotting mechanism to initiate. This is good.

However, check with your nurse at the surgery. Sometimes we all get these menstrual 'blips' but can understand that on day 4, you will worry. How did the flow start on day 1? Sometimes it can take a few days to get going and often post 30, cycles can be occasionally anovular-that is, without egg release. These tend to be lighter in flow but sometimes are followed by the period from hell.

Mine were like this for years... just had Mirena (and thankfully not any of the potential sideeffects) and problem solved.

Scale of the problem - Mooncup needing sorting every 90mins for a day or two - and twice overnight....

MysteriousMiMi · 23/11/2011 12:45

Days 1 and 2 were heavy but normal, day 3 things slowed down and got light almost stopped. Today (day 4) nothing till about 11.00 then it was very heavy and a few clots. I suppose I'm in shock as I thought it was getting lighter till this morning.

See your practice nurse for reassurance. These blips are normal but is always good to be checked over. They will likely adopt a 'wait and see' attitude but obviously if it continues, then you may need a GYN check up. Please try not to worry too much.

Had you been exercising, to the gym, heavy housework? It can trigger a 'clear out' bleed.

MysteriousMiMi · 23/11/2011 13:07

Had been doing washing up this morning so nothing like exercise really. Was in the shower when it started.Sad
You have helped me stop panicking over it though, so thanks

take ibrophen , that will slow the bleeding down

defiinitely don't need a home visit for a heavy period!!

MysteriousMiMi · 23/11/2011 13:13

Just spoke to doctor. he said I need to get Tranexamic Acid tablets for next time.(On prescription). He's not too worried as it has slowed down again now.
I have had a history of it and it caused anaemia so had to have iron tablets.

I ended up getting referred to a consultant over mine - who said that the acid would help but not sort the underlying issue out - which for me was significant enough to actually need sorting out someway or other.

nursenic · 23/11/2011 14:18

MysteriousMimi-

There you go then-I think you are starting to get to the heart of the problem. You could have a small fibroid forming which is a very common, not ominous-in-any-way problem but needs maybe checking for. Some Drs have this 'put up with it' mentality towards gynae probs but I would advise a referral if the bleeding worsens as the months progress. No point in treating low level anaemia if you can have underlying issue tackled. Anaemia can make you feel so under par but because the onset of it is so slow, so insidious, you often do not realise how tired and low it has made you feel until it has been resolved.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 23/11/2011 14:38

I would also be asking your GP to refer you to a gynae asap rather than just taking transexamic acid tablets. It does not address WHY this is happening, such tablets will only treat the symptoms.

There is an underlying cause; both fibroids and or endometriosis can cause heavy bleeding to arise so further investigation from a specialist is warranted. Some GPs are not all that helpful actually when it comes to such issues and it is all too easy to be fobbed off.
