Cracked a tooth while in labour with DD2 (4 years ago) and it's never been right.

Going tomorrow for the dreaded root treatment and have only ever heard horror stories about it

You'll be fine.

I'll think of you as I have to go tomorrow for some treatment and have to have a dreaded anaestetic.

Gillian76 · 04/01/2006 21:35

I really would rather have the anaesthetic. AM fine when I can't feel it, but nearly hit the roof at the first twinge of pain if I'm not numbed!

And I have had 3 children so I can do pain!

take it from someone with lots of experience (6 lots of root canal ) it is nowhere near as bad as some horror stories are. It all depends on if there is infection under the tooth if not its relatively painless, im not sure if its standard but in each of mine they have killed the nerve, so the next day although it can be a little uncomfortable its nothing paracetamol cant help good luck

Gillian76 · 04/01/2006 21:43

Dentist says the nerve is dead anyway so she wasn't going to give me any anaesthesia .

think I'll ask for it to be on the safe side!

Yes deffo have the injection. You never know.

Just don't eat, drink or speak after. I always end up embarrasing myself after by dribbling

Gillian76 · 04/01/2006 21:48

Good day to start my diet then!

Yes, I hate the aftermath of it, but worth it at the time!

if the nerve is dead ime you wont feel anything its quite scary but all i felt was the pressure no pain hope it all goes well today

chicagomum · 05/01/2006 12:08

If the nerve is dead (100%) the root canal treatment can be done (pianleesly) without anaesthetic, but I often offer patients anaesthetic anyway, particularly if they are nervous (ie once they are numb they can "relax" a bit rather than lie there all tensed up waiting to see if it will hurt iyswim). As others have said, providing the tooth isn't infected (which you would know about, as you would be in pain, root canal isn't too bad an experience (one slightly unpleasant aspect is the duration you have to keep your mouth open (achy jaw for some people).

I had root canal treatment before Christmas - the nerve was dead - had been infected (ouch) - had no anaesthetic and it was fine.

Gillian76 · 05/01/2006 21:48

Well I had it. Was a quivering wreck, but had it!

I did get an anaesthetic but not a "block". Not sure what that means but I did feel a strangely unpleasant sensation. Not really pain, but not nice.

Hope I never have to do it again!
