Trivial question, but when do 'stork bites' disappear?

Trivial question, I know, but I'm curious. When dd was born she had a large, red stork bite on the nape of her neck, and another running in a line from her hairline to the bridge of her nose. I was told they would disappear by the time she was 6 - 12 months old ... she's 4.5 years old now and still has them. I'm not really concerned about them, just curious as to how long these things really do take to disappear, and whether this is a birthmark that she's stuck with rather than something that will disappear.

DS has stork mark on nape of his neck, not showing any signs yet of fading. Could be hereditery - I don't have them but both my Sister and my Dad do, in more or less the same place! Not aware that its ever been a problem for either of them....

polly28 · 05/01/2006 19:42

ds had them on his forehead and back of head.

have just realised they've gone,he's 3yr4m,no idea when that happened!

paolosgirl · 05/01/2006 22:02

DS has one on his wrist - he's 8, and it doesn't show any sign of disappearing.

sweetkitty · 05/01/2006 22:26

DD 17mo has them on her eyelids and back of the neck. Eyelids have faded but as everyone says more noticable when shes crying.

jacobsmummy · 05/01/2006 22:31

my daughter is 10, and hers was quite noticable when she was little. Very occassionally, if she is ill or upset, it seems to reappear but very faint compared to how it was.

It must vary from person to person, but they do fade eventually. I have yet to meet an adult who still has one!

don't worry, I'm sure it will fade eventually!

Nightynight · 05/01/2006 23:28

dd1 is 9, she had the same ones you describe WWB. The one on her face seems to have faded recently (it was definitely still visible when she was 4.5). The one on the nape of her neck is still there under her hair, I think.

Mirage · 05/01/2006 23:31

DD1 {2.4} still has them on the back of her neck, but her hair covers them.DD2 has them in exactly the same place, but she is only 7 months.

HandbagAddiction · 06/01/2006 07:51

DD had stork marks on her eyelids which probably disappeared by the time she was 6-9 months old. She also had a large strawberry mark on her outer thigh - quite high up. She's now 2.3 and I would say that it too has almost disappeared, i.e. if you didn't know she had had it originally - then you would probably think what's left is just the remains of a bruise or something. As with all strawberry marks though - it did start to get a bit bigger before finally getting 'reabsorbed'. Doctors were quite surprised how quickly it had gone.

podkin · 06/01/2006 08:04

Silly question but what are they exactly ?

I was just looking at my dd's mark this morning so surprised to see this thread !

ruty · 06/01/2006 10:48

my ds had one on his forehead about the size of a one pence piece. It has faded completely now, he's 15 months.

WigWamBam · 06/01/2006 11:01

Podkin, they're apparently a type of birthmark caused by an over-large collection of blood vessels just below the skin.

I'm not worried about dd's ... was just curious to find out when they really do disappear, as I was told by the midwives they would disappear within a couple of weeks, then by the HV that they would disappear by the time she was a year old. For her sake I hope that they fade, because the one on her forehead is really quite prominent, but if they don't then they don't, and it won't be any great shakes. I quite like it, it's part of her, but she may not!

Both my dd (4 months) and ds (16 months) have them in the same place - back of neck. Ds's is nearly gone now though.

I thought they were the chosen ones...lol

moopie · 06/01/2006 20:51

I had a strawberry mark around my eye that dissapeared when I was 3. Dd has a stork mark on the back of her neck (she is 7 months) dp still has a stork mark on back of his neck too (he is 33)!

mummyhill · 07/01/2006 09:25

mine looks quite spectacular if I am ill, not had enough sleep, cry excesivley or fly into a rage.
