Please help me work out what is causing my pain?

I have horrific back pain at the moment. It's a recurring problem but it's never been as bad or lasted as long as it is right now. (I am also 19 weeks pg, no idea if this is related. It's my 2nd pg and I don't recall having this problem 1st time.)

The pain is very low down on the right hand side, always in the same place. It is a sharp, acute pain. At it's worst, I cannot lift my right leg off the floor for total agony in my lower right back. I have been frequently stuck in standing and sitting positions, unable to move because lifting that leg is so excruciating.

It gets better if I rest completely, but if I do any normal amount of activity (eg today, some light cleaning in the morning - getting twinges - followed by a gentle stroll round the park in the afternoon - got back to the car and could barely walk and dh had to lift my right leg into car for me.) I suffer for the rest of the day and will probably suffer tomorrow too even if I rest.

I don't know who to go to for help - GP, midwife, private physio / osteopath / chiropractor. Or whether to just prescribe myself total rest until it gets better without bothering anybody (not easy with a full time job and family but I could manage if I absolutely had to.)

Sorry for long post. What could it be and what should I do?

? sciatic nerve?

bushymcbush · 20/11/2011 00:13

Thanks for reply.

I thought the sciatic nerve went down the left side, so had dismissed that idea. Also, the pain doesn't shoot down my bum and leg like I've heard it does with sciatica, but is concentrated on a small area of my back.

Will google it just to be sure.

I've got nearly exactly the same thing and someone on here said sacroiliac joint. I've googled it and I think they're right. I'm going to see a physio next week.

Does sound like sacroiliac to me...

In pregnancy, the hormone s that get released to make you a bit more bendy to allow childbirth to take place can sometimes make you too floppy, so the sacroiliac gets out of position and hurts like hell.

I ended up with a pregnancy corset type thing to give support through the NHS physio and my osteo kept me e walking.

Go see someone because the wait on the NHS can be a while!

Sciatica typically described as shooting down the back of leg but can lead to ache or seveer pain restricted to the outer buttock or lower back. Have you tried acupuncture or TENS machine - both were helpful for me.
