Can 17 year olds in FT education still get free dental treatment?

My ds went to the dentist yesterday as has had a problem with a wisdom tooth coming through. I paid £45 for the checkup and an Xray which I was a bit surprised about as I thought children's dental care was free, but the receptionist said that as they're a private dentist, it was to be paid for.

Fair enough, but he needs to have both wisdom teeth removed, I think she said about £100 or so.

Does anyone know if this is definitely payable, and also does anyone know if it's a really painful process? DH has just done a demo of three people holding him down when he had it done and the dentist bracing his foot against the chair to yank his tooth out which didn't exactly reassure ds Hmm

No idea about the procedure but if you can find an NHS dentist then yes it's free.

Just need to find an NHS dentist..........

NHS treatment would be free but you pay for a private dentist

HauntedLittleLunatic · 19/11/2011 16:21

It would be free at an nhs dentist - but not at a private practice.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 19/11/2011 16:22

You can find local nhs dentists that are taking patients on the nhs website.

Thanks everyone. I've just checked nhs dentists in the area but none of them are taking on new patients.

I'll just suck up the fees, he needs sorting fairly soon.

My dd (age9) has nhs treatment at my private dental surgery. I just have to sign a form. So if I was you I'd be asking around.

Some.dentists do offer Nhs treatment as well as private. But not all.
