Plaster cast off advice

My child (6) has had his leg in plaster after a buckle fracture just after a month ago. It came off this morning (it was the third cast) and he is still screaming every time his leg is moved. Is it just normal stiffness / wasted muscles causing the pain or is it still not healed? I don't know what the pain is normally like when a cast comes off. They didn't X-ray him after it was removed.

no experence except my DD 5 had a cast off last week for a broken arm and pins removed in theatre. She is absolutley fine and in no pain (wasn't either when the cast was on) only slight pains when she stretches it (currently trying to flex it from its 90 degree bend position)

CAn you ring the ward and find out if this is normal for this condition? Sounds a bit unusual to me.

good luck

I assume they x-rayed it before they removed the cast though? Sounds odd. Ds2 broke his leg just before he was 3. They x-rayed it before they removed the cast. Said it was fine to remove - you could still see the break but consultant said that was normal Confused . He added that if ds2 fell over and landed on the leg it would break again.... Ok I was terrified then! Once removed he didn't use the leg for 2 weeks. We tried to encourage him, but he would not put weight on it - said it felt funny. He did not complain of pain though.
I would get it checked out if I were you.

No, there was no x-ray at all. Just a doctor who said that if it's been in plaster 4 and a bit weeks it's definitely healed.

He's been better today, but has stayed on the sofa not moving at all, and has cried when he's moved it iyswim.

Thank's for your advice - I've booked him back into the Fracture clinic on Monday.

hello

How did you get on today at the fracture clinic?

LivingDead · 21/11/2011 20:52

My son had a buckle fracture when he was 1, initially they said the cast would be on for 3 weeks, but ended up being on for 6. He didn't seem bothered by it at all after the cast was on (but couldn't actually walk, so that may have helped).

He was 100% normal after the cast came off and actually walked for the first time 2 weeks later, I don't think that amount of pain sounds normal at all, I would want a second opinion.

DS had a broken leg in plaster for 6 weeks. He screamed as they removed it for an X ray after 6 weeks, and they promptly re-plastered him for another 3 weeks as not fully healed.

When it finally came off he was VERY sensitive and stiff and it took a lot of soaking in the bath etc to get him moving it (+ tons of E45 as he was very flaky & hairy!)

Hope you got on ok at the clinic.

Flaky and hairy - weird isn't it? DD also now likes her arm stroked cos it feels like its being scratched - must be sensitive I guess.

DD has broken both wrists over the years and never complained of any pain after the casts came off, just itchy dry skin for a couple of days.
Not happy to pull her bike brakes the first day, after that fine.
I still cringe slightly when she happily swings off her left arm and remember the Xray with both bones snapped straight through.

How was it?
