I'm falling to bits. Does my latest problem sound like IBS? Or what?

About 6-8 times a day I'm getting a sudden urge to go to the toilet. Stomach churning, feeling nauseus. Couple of times I've been able to ignore it until it goes away (was unable to go to loo - home visit to client, on school run).
It's waking me up at night and I'm not sleeping well anyway (feeding dd3).

This started Monday night.

In case it's relevant! I've also have had thrush for 2 weeks ( following anti- biotics for ear infection) I'm getting a lot of back/hip/pelvic pain so have been taking pain killers ( mainly Sat & Tues/Wed).

Worth a trip tothe doctor

I have just been reading about diverticulitis which is similar to IBS

Take a detailed list of all your symptoms

stripeywoollenhat · 17/11/2011 21:55

antibiotics upset your gut flora as well, maybe? i would try probiotics, but also a trip to the gp

HarrietJones · 18/11/2011 07:54

I thought that re ABs but I finished themnearly 2 weeks ago Hmm
At GP 9:30 so see what she says. I can't keep getting up this much at night.

It could be an antibiotic related thing, they can cause all sorts.

I don't want to worry you but when I had clostridium it presented like this. Ask your doc to send off a stool sample to check, if it doesn't stop soon.

It could be IBS or it could be a bowel infection or inflammation.

How did you get on with the GP?

HarrietJones · 18/11/2011 13:40

She said it sounded like IBS but that wouldn't come on so fast. She thinks it's a bug my body isn't dealing with properly, probably due to ABs lowering my resistance.

She said to come back if it's still happening next week.

Hmmm....Ok. If she thinks it's a bug I would suggest you go back as soon as you can, I mean if it gets worse over the weekend, go back immediately to out of hours, but she shouldn't be leaving it without testing you for infection.

Clostridium is unusual but it happens after antibiotic use, due to the good bugs being killed off and these ones being resistant, so they overpopulate and start attacking the bowel.

If it is suspected it needs to be tested for and treated asap.
It's notoriously hard to find in a sample so you ideally will want to do three, and keep the refrigerated till they are sent off to the lab - we live by the hospital so it was easy for me to pop over to pathology and tell them to put it in their fridge, rather than mine Grin

If you are unlucky and do have something like that, it will be treated with another antibiotic. It's also very common for small babies to carry it in their stools so possible to be exposed to it via your little one maybe.

Don't worry, it does eventually go away but you'll want to have it treated.

Hopefully it's not this, but Iwanted to make sure you know to go back and insist on being tested due to your recent history of a-bs.

Good luck, hope it improves over the weekend. Probiotics and so on can't hurt, but definitely don't take anything like immodium as any germs need to be got out rather than left in there.

HarrietJones · 18/11/2011 18:07

Thanks that's something to remember. I have been a bit less churny today so possibly progress? If I'm still doing it on Monday I'll go back

Well even superbugs can self resolve, it's funny, the doctors all panicked hugely when I had it, and were like 'you MUST start treatment immediately or you will die!' but actually after about four months of things not working, and it recurring and so on, I read somewhere that if you have a minor recurrence it can actually get better on its own.

So don't panic, well it doesn't sound like you are, which is grand Smile and wait till monday. Anything gets worse or you start passing any blood or mucus etc then definitely go and see someone.

Let us know how you get on x

HarrietJones · 18/11/2011 18:19

It's less panicking than getting pissed off! I've loads of niggly problems that aren't shifting, I really didn't need another one or less sleep

HOw's your diet in general? You have to give your body the opportunity to get itself better. Try this -
avoid all refined carbohydrates, substitute wholemeal/brown alternatives
avoid alcohol, caffeine, fizzy drinks
eat more fruit and veg
don't eat too much of anything.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 20/11/2011 15:32

If you are thinking along the lines of IBS or a tummy bug you want to avoid wholemeal and high fibre products, you'll never be off the loo!!

HarrietJones · 20/11/2011 15:49

I'm a lot better now. Only got rumblings twice yesterday & once so far today!

My diet isn't great but I do eat a lot of fruit & veg. Don't drink alcohol but have a weakness for pepsi!
