I'm a bit scared. Please can anyone tell me what this was?

I was erm in the bedroom with my DP last night and suddenly I felt a build up of pressure in my head. Not painful but not pleasant - it was like I had taken poppers. My mouth went numb and I couldn't move my lips properly for perhaps a minute. Please don't laugh and say it was an orgasm because I know what they feel like and this wasn't sexual at all. Today my head feels woolly but ok. Googling didn't help - it listed everything from brain tumours and strokes to migraines. Has this happenned to anyone else please and does anyone know what this was and if I should be concerned?

Have you fully recovered? It's most likely nothing to worry about, but it might be worth going to see your GP about, for reassurance if nothing else. I am, however, a paranoid hypochondriac, so please don't let me worry you!

Thanks smile. I think so. My head feels a bit weird but there is no numbness or anything else. I am terrible for thinking the worst when it comes to my health as you can probably tell Smile

"The symptoms of a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) are the same as for a stroke but only last from between a few minutes to a few hours, then completely disappear. However, never ignore a TIA as it is a serious warning sign that there is a problem with the blood supply to your brain.
There is about a one in 10 chance that those who have a TIA will experience a full stroke during the four weeks following the TIA. If you have had a TIA, you should contact your GP, local hospital or out-of-hours service, as soon as possible." NHS stroke info.

Off to the doc with you, my girl.

Shit really Tianc??? This was my worst fear. This IS my worst fear.....

I'm not any kind of medic, btw. But two of my relatives have had this ? one very minor, the other slightly more serious but he's bounced back.

If it's nowt, brilliant, but the doc will not think you've wasted your time going in.

If it is something, the really good news is that you've had a warning and there may be actions/drugs you can take to protect yourself from a full stroke.

So this could turn out to be one of those scare-the-pants-off-you blessing-in-disguise thingies. One of the things I do know about strokes is that prompt treatment makes all the difference.

Tianc · 16/11/2011 20:01

Oh, and good luck!

Notalone · 16/11/2011 20:58

Thanks Tianc - did your relatives have the same symptoms as me? Am really frightened now Sad

Sorry, don't know their exact symptoms - heard about as part of general news roundups.

Really, that's how trivial it was for one of them ? Xmas news, So-n-so had mini-stroke so thinks they should cut down the 50 hour weeks.Smile And these events were more than a decade ago and they're both still going strong.

Please, please don't sit there stewing. It may be nothing, it may be something else entirely, it may be a useful hint to avoid future trouble. Get thee to a doctor, let them sort it out.

Meanwhile have a nice Brew and breathe. (Not simultaneously, obviously. Wink)

AngryFeet · 16/11/2011 22:07

It doesn't sound like a TIA to me but maybe go to the GP anyway - it never hurts to check.

Are you anxious at all or do you suffer from anxiety or stress?

I do and I get weird sensations in my head quite a bit when I am in bed - all these things seem to flare up at bedtime for some reason.

smileitssunny · 16/11/2011 22:39

TIA came to mind for me, too, but it could be any number of things or nothing. Please don't worry until you've seen the Dr. As Tianc says, could be a blessing in disguise.

Notalone · 17/11/2011 21:23

Thanks everyone. I had a telephone appointment with a triage doctor who said it doesn't sound like anything to be worried about but has asked me to come in next week to be on the safe side.

I have just started a new job which is very hectic so yes, I am under a fair bit of stress. But it never affects me in this way so not really sure if this is the cause or not

Good luck, and hope turns out to be just a nothing after all.
