Has anyone had hip problems which needed replacement/surgery?

I have a hip problem where the socket isn't properly formed - can't remember the name of it Blush

The consultant wanted to do an operation where he would basically hollow out a proper socket for it but I put it off and put it off because we were ttc DS, which took a lot longer than planned.

DS now 4 months and I am in near constant (minor) pain (bad today because had to carry tantrumming toddler DD out of the park yesterday Hmm). Would like to get it sorted but worried about what it would involve - not painwise particularly but I have an idea in my head that it involves being bedridden for six weeks. Is that right or have I made it up? When on earth am I going to get the opportunity to spend six weeks in bed? Confused

I'm so fucked off this has been going on for over 12 years but I was fobbed off by GPs for years. I would have happily spent six weeks in bed when I was childless and employed Hmm

Most hip replacement operations involve the patient getting up and walking around on the same day. They don't allow them to wallow in bed at all. They get up immediately and start their rehab.
You should discuss it with your doctor.

You don't get 6 weeks in bed for anything these days Grin. When my 93 year old gmil had her hip re replaced (she complained that side had only lasted 17 years) she was still up and walking the next day.

Get yourself off to the orthopaedic surgeons and talk to them about what they would intend to do to your hip as it is now

Six weeks in bed, chance would be a fine thing :o

I had my left hip replaced 25th October, out of bed next day, home on day four. I've been walking around everyday since, maybe putting my feet up for an hour in the afternoon.

Today I went on a 2 hour walk around a garden centre, can't tell you how good that was after 2 years of constant pain.

Best thing I ever did, go for it :)

This is great, thanks all. I was under consultant care before but put the whole thing on hold to get pg again (which I don't think consultant was v happy about Hmm). Guess I just call him again? Am ebf 16 wk old DS, not sure how that would work with surgery etc.

You might need to get referred again by your gp, but try calling for an appt first.

Get your MRIs, xrays etc done first, and then worry about surgery. It'll take a few months to decide anything and get a date
