Every time I start an exercise regime I give up after a couple of weeks, a month at most. I am pretty determined this time (how often have I said that before - but have chosen something that will cost me nothing apart from a pair of running shoes. And I'm not buying those just yet ! Dh loves to remind me of past gym memberships that were used for a month or two and then forgotton about . Am doing this along with healthy eating as have at least 3 stone to lose.
I started by doing a 15 minute jog/walk round our local park. Did one on sunday and one on monday. Found it bloody hard going but felt really euphoric at the end of it. Just want to keep it up. Anyone else just starting out and want some support ?
(By the way I am a regular on here but want to keep this under wraps for the time being. )

I've been running for 6 years now. Just wanted to say well done for getting out there. The first step out of the door is always the worst - then there's the next 20 minutes but after that it gets easier.....honest

The womens running network is great if there's a group near you. Also it's a good idea to sign up for one of the Cancer Research Race for Life 5k's. Not as bad as it sounds - all women and you can run/walk - it just gives you a bit of something to aim for.

There's loads for beginners on the Runners World website - training plans to get you running for about 30 minutes in 6 to 8 weeks.

Good luck with it - join us on the Runners thread, we aren't all marathon standard over there (although a couple are!)- but they started small too.

I enjoy running on the treadmill at the gym, and wanted to start running outdoors. I managed about 20 mins at a comfortable pace and felt really euphoric. But during the night I had knee pain and shin splints, and haven't tried it since, I think I over did it, does anyone have any ideas as I would really like to take it up again.

I too am going running for the first time this week, was going to the gym before xmas but found that I only enjoyed the treadmill and the bikes so thought I might as well run instead. Will not go too mad the first time though and gradually build it up. Had been going to the gym for about 3 months and was feeling the benefits and then stopped a month before Xmas and really wished I hadn't now as I will probably be totally worn out again when I start it up.

Am going with a male friend whom has been going months so I hope I don't overdo it.

Is it a great way to lose weight? Found at the gym I didn't lose weight but seemed to tone up a bit and felt better in myself.

notgivingupthistime · 04/01/2006 11:25

potty1, thanks for that website - it is really good. Have cut out the beginners schedule and stuck it to my fridge !

crazydazy, am hoping that the running, along with a healthier diet will result in weight loss. If I just tone up and feel healthier I would be happy - but am sure the changes i have made in my diet will lead to shifting at least a few pounds. I have also given up mid-week drinking. So we shall see !

mancmum, did you run last night ?

Hi!
Did not manage to run for the last couple of nghts as I have a way bad cold and feel really sorry for myself... (turning into a bloke!!) I am planning to go for a walk/run tongight...

I am using this book ...

walk run program

How are you doing -- do you feel you are improving?

notgivingupthistime · 09/01/2006 18:10

Well I'm on my 2nd week. Did 3 times last week and have done twice already this week. Can run a bit further now and for longer. I have been following the beginners advice on the runners world website (thanks Potty1) and found it really useful. A couple of times I have run with friends which is actually much more fun, but I don't always like to be tied to a specific time for running.

Feel a bit more energetic, but it really is quite scary just how unfit I am. Must say that I really do feel good doing something about it

Have you been out yet mancmum ?
Anyone else just starting ?

NGUTT- This time last year I could,'t run up the road, I have now done 5km & 2 10km races and am training to do the London Marathon in April.

there is a runners thread on Mumsnet, please join us. Also Runner world website have plenty of forums including a beginners forum.

I can recommend the following book : Running made easy by Susie Whalley & Lisa Jackson, got mine form Amazon. It has walk / run program in it and programs for beginners. 10km and marathon.
Lots of tips and not too complicated.

keep it up.
