Night Sweats?

mosschops30 · 14/11/2011 21:21

Anyone got any experience?

Ive started having terrible night sweats, i wake up and the sweat is literally dripping off me, i stick to the sheets. At first i thought it was when the heating came on in the morning, but ive started checking the time and sometimes its way before the heating comes on.

Ive had a look online but cant see any really reputable advice. Causes seem to be menopause (im 36), HIV (tested in pregnancy and at work), cancer Shock and medication. I take Sertraline but not sure if its a side effect.

Hi moss. Please see gp ASAP. I am sure she can rule out anything serious! could be medication.
Bump!

ByTheSea · 14/11/2011 21:36

I was having night sweats (and generally feeling rubbish) awhile ago and it was a bad kidney infection. Get yourself checked out.

AtYourCervix · 14/11/2011 21:38

homones?

i've been ignoring my night sweats for years. after dr google told me it was something terminal.

really should do something about it but dr phobic.

mosschops30 · 15/11/2011 21:40

Please please go to GP ASAP. Dh had night sweats and sadly was very ill. Better to be safe.

highlystrung · 16/11/2011 22:55

Sweating is a well documented side effect of Sertraline. I'm taking it and was sweating all the time for a while!

wildstrawberryplace · 16/11/2011 23:02

Agree with Lisad123 - better to be safe, please get it checked (you too cervix). It could be hormones, it could be side effects from medication, but it could be something more serious but treatable if diagosed early.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 16/11/2011 23:04

Like what?

wildstrawberryplace · 16/11/2011 23:29

Well, I didn't say because I don't want to alarm where its not necessary.

southeastastra · 16/11/2011 23:30

i've had night sweats for a year or so, just put it down to hormones. and have had blood checks etc.

it's horrible isn't it

GalaxyAddict · 16/11/2011 23:34

I am also on that drug & I also get the horrid night sweats, sometimes I have to change my pj's in the night as I am soaked!

lisad123 · 16/11/2011 23:36

without wanting to panic, but as you asked, dh has cancer. Please dont assume it is, but always worth a visit to GP

Iamseeingstars · 17/11/2011 01:47

There are a huge list of other diseases/infections etc that also has night sweats as a sympton. Just found yet another one on line.

Night sweating is a sympton, but also having too many bedclothes/covers in a warm room can be a major cause. I overheat at night and we dont have central heating.

Look at any symptons you might have and give them all to your doctor but do get checked out.

Jacksmania · 17/11/2011 02:29

It's the sertraline. I promise you, that's what it is. If you're worried, do go to the GP, but I assure you, it is one of the side-effects of some ADs. Some people are just prone to getting massive, MASSIVE night sweats with some of the SNRIs and SSRIs. I had the same. It was dreadful. Sheets soaked, hair dripping. That is why I eventually had to go off them, I couldn't cope with the night sweating. Venlafaxine dud the same thing to me (it's called Effexor here).

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 17/11/2011 02:44

Jacksmania totally agree and on venlafaxine currently but previously sertraline. it's in the leaflet as a common side effect and does tend to lessen after a while but seems to start again if i've missed a dose. Just out of interest, did you go on to another ssri without these sides? (disclaimer op, not saying don't get it checked out but tis very likely that your meds are the cause)

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 17/11/2011 02:46

ps Jacksmania i take a high dose 300mg of venlafaxine daily and also find if i'm late taking a dose i get severe withdrawal symtoms- light-headedness, palpatations etc. how easy did you find it to come off?

Jacksmania · 17/11/2011 03:29

Someday, I was sadly unable to find any other SNRI/SSRI that didn't give me the dripping night sweats. The best my doctors could come up with was that some people just react like that :(

Coming off venlafaxine was an utter nightmare. I went off them once cold-turkey and felt nearly psychotic. The other time I weaned über-carefully but still had a hard time - electric sensations, skin crawling, ringing in the ears... it was shit. Where I live (West Coast of Canada) venlafaxine is dispensed in a bottle with a massive red warning sticker saying that it should only be discontinued under very close medical supervision.

I started to get the sweats on 75 mg of venlafaxine and 50 mg of sertraline so obv very susceptible.

mosschops30 · 17/11/2011 09:53

Thanks for the advice, im hoping it is the sertraline and nothing more, when i get chance i will go to the docs.
I took sertraline before and didnt have night sweats but i suppose that doesnt rule it out. Im on 50mg.
The night sweats are not as bad as me not taking setraline so will have to cope with it!
