I keep getting big black marks in my field of vision

This has happened several times over recent weeks. I am currently very ill anyway, so don't know if it is connected.

It is my right eye only - sometimes I cannot see out of it. The whole of my field of vision is a great big black circle - I can see a very thin border around the edges. It is like that for a couple of minutes, and then the vision gradually comes back.

What the bloody hell can this be? Is freaking me out somewhat. I am seeing the specicalist about my kidney complaint this week so will mention to him, but has anyone else experience anything like it?

No idea, but eyes are not to be messed about with. Ring an independant optician tomorrow, and get them to have a look at you - they will refer you on if they are at all concerned

debinaboat · 13/11/2011 20:40

i have no idea what is causing this but i think it is something that should be seen by a doctor soon, as in tonight, phone nhs to see what they say.

Chaotica · 13/11/2011 20:42

I was just about to post similar. Even if you're not referred, go to the GP after the optician. I get strange vision with migraine, but it could be a lot of things.

(I was told off by my gp for not going as she obviously thought that the optician should have referred me and didn't.)

firsttimemama · 13/11/2011 20:43

Could be Migraine related.

GetOrfMolLand · 13/11/2011 20:47

I don't get migraines - and everything else feels OK, no other symptoms (other than that of the kidney disease I have).

It is rather unsettling - and the black periods seem to be getting longer.

I will call the doctor tomorrow actually - would think even if I left it to speak to the specialist, he wouldn't really know would he, and would probably say go to my GP in the first instance.

Go straight to A&E. Ask to see the on call neuro reg. If I had done that I would not be partially sighted now. Do not wait until tomorrow, damage coudl be done that can not be reversed. Ok, I did / do have a very very rare condition, but do not risk your eye sight. sorry if i scared you, but a worthless visit is better than no eye sight / brain damage etc...
HOpe your are ok.

KatyMac · 13/11/2011 20:53

I agree with WellIShouldNever straight to A&E please

If it's nothing you'll feel foolish & if it's something you did the best thing

GetOrfMolLand · 13/11/2011 20:55

I have just had a quick google and am quite worried now. I know you should never google symptoms but still.

Thank you well - blimey. Did you have the symptoms for a couple of weeks? I am sorry that that happened to you - it must have been terrifying.

I am calling NHS direct - dP is out collecting dd and I can't drive due to collection of meds I am on, but he is back in 40 mins.

it is something that must be checked out!!

If you are having an episode now then go to A&E if not then phone the opticians or local eye hospital/clinic first thing. And get checked!

My symptoms come out of the blue, I had benign intercranal hypertension... It was really scary, only 24 at the time... Another 3 hours and I would have been brain dead.. Never ever waste time, I did... Am ok now though. Hope you are better today.

mollymole · 14/11/2011 09:42

have you been to A & E or arranged an opticians appointment for today - you really need to do so (ps I work in an opticians, but am NOT an optician, although I do know this needs dealing with immediately)
