Has anyone heard of ASMR?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a physical sensation characterized by a pleasurable tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp... Anyone heard of it/experienced it?

I know this is an old thread but YY!

Had it since I was little.

There is a FB group dedicated to it with loads of "trigger" videos.

Sadly they tend not to work for me.

Double posted because of zombie thread alert...

I get this! Particular voices, gentle crinkly noises, or watching quiet, skilful actions (painting, folding, cooking if it's quiet), make me all zoned out and blissful, with a crinkly head. I don't talk about it IRL as it sounds a bit odd Smile

Quaffle · 10/08/2013 12:35

I never used to talk about it either!

Even from being little I was oddly embarrassed about it. No idea why.

I'm gutted that trigger videos don't seem to work. I think any sort of contrivance or trying too hard "blocks" the sensation. The strongest tingles come from voices, usually male.

MissMilliment · 10/08/2013 12:45

My first memory of it is a primary school teacher who used to read to us - she wasn't very nice really, but had a wonderful reading voice and a very slow, deliberate way of turning the pages . Like you, I find it happens accidentally, though Bob Ross videos are a sure-fire winner for me if I'm in the right mood Smile.

I think the embarrassment is because any attempt to describe it sounds like some odd sexual fetish. I'm not bothered really how people get their kicks (within reason!), but for me asmr is not at all sexual, so it bothers me that it might be seen that way if I try and talk about it.

Quaffle · 10/08/2013 14:54

God no there's nothing sexual about it at all!!

YY to Bob Ross but as you say, I have to be in the mood.

There are some massage instruction videos clips on Youtube. Sometimes they work for me. Especially ones by someone called Oidin Jaisarie.

I used to work at a Snappy Snaps type place and there was a local copper who'd pop in for a chat from time to time. He had a very deep, rich, slow voice and I just used to sit there mesmerised, tingling away and probably looking utterly dopey Grin

It has a name! I'm highly likely to get this if someone strokes my hair [bliss]

Quaffle · 10/08/2013 15:01

Yep it has a name :)

Theories abound about what causes it. Fascinating.

I got the same feeling when I was having cranial osteopathy - after about 5 sessions. Osteopath said it was the membrane unjamming from between the cranial stitches.

I have no idea what that means.

I've always had it. Things like the sound of rustling paper bags, whispering, certain voices would make me sleepy and blissed out.

About a year ago I did an online search for crinkling paper and discovered it was 'a thing'. There are a whole load of people on youtube who have ASMR channels with things like 45 mins of gum chewing and talking or assembling lego models. They really help relax me and send me to sleep. I even have favourite channels Blush.
