Hi just been having a chat with MW about contraception. DH thinks he doesnt want anymore kids but we are only 28 and not 100% sure. He was talking about a vasectomy which I think is too final. We have a 2yr old and a 2wk old so obviously too early to be making any decisions. MW just mentioned the mirena coil and said it is 99.6% effective and once fitted it is in place for 7 yrs unless you get it removed. Sounds like a good option for us as even if we did have more I would want a 4yr gap now. So just wondered about peoples experiences of it.

bump.....any more good news?

I had a hormone free coil fitted when DS was 3 months (now 9 months) - I was fed up with artificial hormones after 15 yrs on the pill. It's fantastic! The threatened heavy periods never appeared and I'm a stone lighter than I was before I had him! Wish I'd had one years ago instead of the crappy pill messing me up!

Nemo - what did you end up doing?

I'm still undecided!

i had the mirena coil fitted a few years ago and thought it was fantastic but last june i found out i was pregnant, it turned out to be ectopic. unfortunately it ruptured and i had to have emergency surgery to remove my left tube. I have since learnt that althought the mirena coil is a highly effective method of contraception if it does fail it drastically increases the chances of the pregnancy being ectopic which of course puts the womens life at risk

leggymamba · 10/01/2006 16:02

jco - that's awful. Must have been a bad time for you.

So insummary then from the experience on this thread the mirena coil can make you borderline psychotic, increase risk of eptopic pg, put on weight and gives you spots.....but on the plus side it stops periods and might not do any of the above.

Still don't know, I can't face using condoms and getting pg can make you borderline psychotic, increase risk of eptopic pg, put on weight and gives you spots.....but on the plus side it stops periods and might not do any of the above

LM still havent done anything yet as am still having post partum bleeding. Will wait until 6wk check etc before making any decisions.

Helen38 · 10/01/2006 16:17

lol yes that about sums it up!

I they suit you they are great, but if not like me then they are easy to remove, so i would still say they are worth trying if you are not 100% sure you don't want any more babies, otherwise send dp/h off for the snip

Oh Nemo I got pregnant with DS a year later after having the mirena coil fitted. Haven mentioned this before when somebody else asked about the mirena coil. Had it fitted because I always forgot the pill and a year later was pregnant, apparently it had expelled itself which can happen. It was very low down and she said if I had felt inside I would have known. Thats exactly why I didn't as I am not really in the habit of doing something like that and never wear tampons.

Surprised DP didn't feel it though

Once we were over the shock we were looking forward to having the baby but then was told I would need the coil removing and this could cause a miscarriage was a very scary time but fortunately after a scare of slight bleeding the baby was fine and I went on to have normal pregnancy.

I was told it was very safe and that is why I trusted it completely, I like you wanted a 4 year gap but now DS is here I am glad it happened and I think fate must have had a hand in the whole situation as I think once DD had got to 4 years old I wouldn't want to do the whole "baby years" again.

leggymamba · 10/01/2006 16:37

So, how to get dh to have snip?!! He keeps mumbling under his breathe everytime I mention it - but that's a whole new thread! I'm probably only 97% certain I don't want anymore and that's got lots to do with teething.

CD - have you had another one fitted?

Tallgirl · 10/01/2006 16:38

What about normal coil with no hormones?? (no direct experience of this yet but would solve some of the putting on weight/PMT problems I assume??)

crazydazy · 10/01/2006 16:43

Nope I sent DP for the snip after DS was born. We had completed our family and I didn't want to use contraception so felt this was the way forward -he wasn't keen but agreed that I brought his two wonderful children into the world and so it was a small price to pay.

Can be quite cunning when I want to be

Helen38 · 10/01/2006 16:48

You have to be really sure tho, i was certain didn't want more but we felt that as we were both under 30 at the time we should wait as that felt a bit young to do something so permanent and here we are having no 3 next month Mind you dh does look worried if you mention the snip

crazydazy · 10/01/2006 16:58

We were VERY sure. The thought of more than two terrified me.

Helen38 · 10/01/2006 16:59

Me too, but I'll find out what it' like in 7 wks or so

crazydazy · 10/01/2006 21:22

Send him for it doing Helen before number 4 arrives
