PCOS -metformin/cerazette

Not sure where else to post this, but know many of you ladies have been on/are on Met for PCOS.

I was at docs today, my letter was back from consultant, who states i start on Metformin for PCOS as my blood results came bk abnormal. High LH levels High Androstendione levels, and Borderline testosterone.
My symptoms are: Acne, Increased hair growth (especially on face), irregular periods and struggling with weight loss, and gaining weight despite excercise and diet!!
So got my prescription for metformin and started today 500mcg once a day for a week then 500mcg twice a day.
She also mentioned contraception to me as i cae off the pill back in april to start having tests done. I said i was on cerazette before, and she said i would be fine on that, as the two meds dont conflict each other.

The worry i have is that, metformin is meant to regulate my periods, but when i was on cerazette my periods stopped or i had months where i would bleed on and off. So how will met help regulate me and help with other symptoms if taking cerazette too??

Akso i have been reading about Metformin and PCOS on the net and read that metformin is only to be used if you are insulin resistant??? i dont know if i am?? Are the tests iv had done enough to show that i do need the metformin??
Sorry to go on, i am very happ that im finally getting somewhere and finally got answears, but dont understand about insulin ect and whether the cerazette is best pill for me.
..............ohh cant take mini pill as i suffered migraines with it.
I would love to have another DC in time but not just yet, so need to know which is best option to take at minute for contraception.

Thanks in Advance

If you have PCOS then by definition you are insulin resistant. PCOS isn't associated with insulin resistance, it is caused by insulin resistance.

Metformin did nothing to regulate my periods. All it did was make me sick to my stomach. Evil, evil drug it is. You'd be better off, going on a strict low gi diet and cutting out sugar. Easier said tahn done I know.

Thanx for your reply A1980 im on day 2 of metformin and soo far soo good.
That makes it clearer to me that PCOS is caused by insulin resistance so i know that taking met is okay then.
Sorry to hear metformin did nothing for you, and if im the same i am going to try the low GI diet......well im sort of following at the minute.
So if i cut out the suger and take metformin will my insulin not go too low?? Soz for the questions x

Ive been on metformin for weeks now and its been fantastic for me.
I was the same as you, despite diet and being fairly active, i just could not shake the weight!

In all the time I have been on metformin, i have lost 13lb and i havent been trying iyswim
I cant answer the questions about the insulin, but I'm sure your gp could answer these for you.
If it doesnt cause you bad side effects, stick with it, you never know

I have PCOS and have been on metformin before. Lost a fair amount of weight without trying,w as great. Only reason I stopped was because I conceived DS3 (depite being told could never happen without fertility treatment).

SHould really start them again, but dread it as the first 4 weeks are hell with crippling stomach cramps. I was on 2000mg though, which is 4 tablets a day, starting with one a day and increasing by one a week.

My symptoms did decrease, which is a good thing, weight loss, less spotty skin, and my mood was ok as well.

Ohhh fantastic nothernmonkey and 5inthebed glad to hear u both lost weight....and even better you say without trying!!

I think i should make another appt, ya know what its like you have all these questions to ask and come out without asking them. ATM i feel fine biut im only taking 1 a day, next week will be on 2 a day, so FX il be okay too. Can i just ask you both about drinking alcohol with metformin. Bit of a weird question i know, i dont drink alot and when i do i am quite sensible, its just im away next weekend with ladies from work and would like to beable to have a couple. I noticed on the leaflet it says Do not drink !!

Fab news about you DS3 5inthebed after being told you wouldnt conceive without help just goes to show hey!
Happy to hear that your symptoms decreased while on metformin. xx

I have to say that so far I have avoided alcohol.
I think one night a had a few but i stopped taking it the day before.

I will watch with interest to see the answer to that one

5inthebed · 09/11/2011 22:14

Ah, you see, I tried to have a glass of wine when on it, and came over all quiffy. Tried again a few weeks later and same thing. So I would avoid drinking if you can.

DS3 was a lovely surprise, had to have fertility treatment for DS1+2.

shellmc · 10/11/2011 20:16

Ohhhh i see soo i will have to very cautious!! I rang docs earlier to ask, the receptionist got back to me saying, it should be okay to have a couple but not to drink excessivley or binge drink which i dont do anyhow, but i am gonna be careful.

5inthebed Im soo happy for you that you didnt need fertility treatment for DS3, just shows that it isnt always impossible xx

Thank you, it was quite a shock POAS, had to do another few to prove it wasn't a joke.

Good luck, and remember, the first few week are horrible but worth sticking with.

shellmc · 10/11/2011 20:44

Thanks again!!
Im hoping i will feel okay on them, as you say getting through first few weeks is the hardest i will just have to think positive and that this flab will soon start to shift if i can stick with it :)
