Dental Check-up, just been told I have Gum Disease but that if I can take better care of my health she can't see no reason why it could not improve. Annoyed with myself for not taking better care of myself but any suggestions for what to avoid foodwise or what better brushing techniques other that I already do please? Been given some special toothpaste to help and am back next week for treatment but I really want to make an impression and prove I'm taking it seriously :( x

I floss twice a day now as once just wasn't working properly. My dentist also told me to dip the floss in mouth wash so that it gets in between the teeth. It's a bit messy. My gums have improved greatly.
When I got an abscess the dentist told me to use the corsodyl mouthwash for a few weeks and it says it is used for gum disease. Your dentist will no doubt give you a whole load of things to try.

I have chronic gum disease and going to a dental hygienist for an appointment so they can teach how to clean your teeth again is really worth it.
I use oral B's new toothpaste, an oral b electric toothbrush, dental tape between front teeth, interdental brushes between back teeth and corsodyl mouthwash daily. I use disclosing liquid regularly to check I am doing a good job.

Thankyou for your replies, I'll readily admit I don't actually know how to floss and would probably help a great deal! Confused is there not like the mini harp-like ones you can get from places like boots?

Invest in an electric toothbrush, use interdental brushes (buy in Boots) and non alcoholic mouth wash. Brush thoroughly but not too hard. Hygienist should be able to sort you out quite quickly though.

A hygienist visit will be money very well spent. They are obsessive the experts on this & have loads of tips & tricks. I'm a dentist and I luurve the hygienist who works for me, he's a magician, great & absolutely wonderful.

Ask her to show you (or the hygienist to show you) the correct brushing technique. My dentist tells me that most people brush their teeth wrongly because they were never shown the correct technique.

You are not alone - I posted a thread on this only a couple of weeks ago, in a real panic because I had noticed one of my gums receeding. :(

Grumpystiltskin came on and was very kind and reassuring.

The hygienist told me that the most important thing was to brush along the gum line. I am pretty sure that no one had told me this before!

I am now using Corsodyl paste, brushing along the gum line and flossing most days once, some days twice and only missing the occasional day. Blush

My gums definitely look paler and closer to the pretty coral colour of the hygienist's own gums!

I have to see the hygienist 4 times in the next 6 weeks before I have an implant post fitted. i thought I was doing fairly well in the teeth cleaning department but , my word, she was not happy. I now have 3 different sizes of interdental brushes as she was not happy with the flossing I was doing. She was quite firm about brushes being better than floss and that which toothpaste I use would not make a lot of difference.

PS She had lovely teeth and gums.

I have more bridges in my mouth than there is in London!

Yes, get your dentist/hygenist to show you how to brush - they are very helpful.

Use corsodil to get inflamation down but this should only be used for a certain amount of time.

Get yourself an electric toothbrush.

Floss at least once a day

She may also tell you to get interdent tiny little brushes called tepe's if you have large pockets in gums.

Your hygenist/dentist will advise you on how to use all the above.

Don't worry, it's very easy sorted.

You just have to MAINTAIN it! Grin

I recently bought a sonic electric toothbrush ( not cheap ) .
I like it because it discourages me from brushing too hard ( which I always do ) ,makes teeth feel really clean .
trumpton - do tell ,what toothpaste was recommended ?
My gums have receeded a lot - I think too hard brushing partly to blame .

Sorry I didn't reply to this before now, internet has been playing up, but wow thanks for all the advice it's very helpful :) trumpton I was the same, sat down in the chair waiting to be told what a good girl I was, I couldn't have been more wrong! Blush I had an abscess this week (Ouch is not the word!), so am having the tooth out next week. Grumpystiltskin thanks for your advice too, I will ask her about the hygienist. branchingout sorry you had the same problem, glad things are getting better x
