Grumpy, grizzly baby before a poo?

Is it fairly common for babies to be really grumpy for several hours before they poo? My 12 week old DS was simply horrible this morning and then cheered up significantly after he filled his pants. His poo is the colour and consistency of chicken korma (nice) and pretty smelly. Is it normal to be so smelly? He farts quite a lot too and these can be smelly too. He's on Aptamil hungry baby formula and I'm thinking maybe I should switch to another brand?

At times my DD was like this. I have heard that the hungry baby formula is harder for them to digest, could it be that?

This could be my DS! I BF him to start with and I would say that in comparison, FF poo is very pongy. He is also on Aptamil (though not Hungry Baby) and it tended to make him do slightly harder poos than breast milk and he was also a bit constipated. Not sure about you, but I know that if I am having digestive discomfort, it makes me pretty grumpy! Now that DS is 23 weeks and teething, it's not such a problem anymore. LOTS of runny nappies!

It could be the hungry baby formula but I switched from Aptamil First at 8 weeks (4 weeks ago) when I finished combination feeding because he seemed to be feeding too often and I was trying to stretch him to 3 hours between feeds.....but I may have acted too soon. Will see how he is over the next week or so and then maybe switch back to Aptamil first. Any other formula recommendations?

ChrissasMissis, how do you know when they start teething? My DS is tetchy and has a short fuse anyway so I'm not sure I'll notice a difference! He is dribbling a bit now at 12 weeks and sucking his hands lots (even when he's not hungry...more of a comfort thing) but he's not showing any other signs. No red cheeks or temperature.

I think Aptamil do an easy digest formula for babies suffering from colic.....although he is too old for colic now and I think that might be a step too far back in the wrong digestion.....I mean direction. Slip of the keyboard!
